I wandered into the local library the other day. Thirty minutes to waste. Looked up Christianity. Found a book that looked somewhat interesting.
The local library is the last place I would ever use normaly.
Book title "God Actually," author Roy Williams. Page 21 reads "...I do not believe that the Bible is inerrant...". Well thats a new idea Roy. Roy the author is a Lawyer by the way.
Also, same paragraph "...cannot accept interpretations of Scripture that fly in the face of contempory knowledge of the world.". Now this is more revealing, starting to see where he is going with this.
Wait for it, turn the page. The proof he supplied was, "The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is pi, not 3.1".
Two Scriptural passages were given as follows,
"Now he made the sea of cast metal ten cubits from brim to brim, circular in form, and its height was five cubits, and thirty cubits in circumference." 1 Kings 7:23
"Also he made the cast metal sea, ten cubits from brim to brim, circular in form, and its height was five cubits and its circumference thirty cubits." 2 Chronicles 4:2
Yes, this was the clear refutation! Or should I say this was in his mind, the clear refutation.
He did not read the Bible in a literal way, and this was the reason why. What further proof did he have to offer. Case closed he must have thought.
It does not take the brightest bulb in the room to see the flaw in his argument.
The Hebrews were using cubits as thier standard, not a Calculus textbook, Roy.
The Hebrews had no concept of a real number (pi), Roy.
God gave them dimensions, He was not trying to educate the Hebrews in number theory for heavens sake, Roy.
God was on a mission to save mankind, not educate man in mathematical precision, Roy.
There is no such thing as a perfect circle, only as an ideal in mathematics Roy.
In fact, even today we could not make the perfect circle Roy.
In fact, pi so far calculated to two trillion places is still only an approximation.
For the Hebrews the dimensions given by God were good enough for the purpose. Do you see the point Roy.
This ridiculous proof of the innerancy of Scripture, left me with an even deeper disgust of the secular human mind.
