The Hebrew word translated as Giants in some translations in Genesis 6 and in Numbers 13 is Nephilim. There's some confusion and division on what/who exactly they were, and there's no clear consensus on the meaning, the NIV translators chose to just transliterate the Hebrew phrase into English, instead of translating it to the word giants.
