Is praying in tongues for everyone?

Ever since the first known occurrence on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4) people have always questioned the existence of tongues. They started off trying to bury it saying, “…their drunk that’s all” (Acts 2:13) No one could understand how these people spoke in languages of man that the speakers had not been taught. Because they didn’t understand it they didn’t believe it was real. That is the problem we still face today. But the believer must know tongues are a mystery between the believer and God. Tongues are defined in 1 Corinthians 14:2 as being a mystery between the believer and God no one else can understand it. It is not of the Devil and it has not ceased. There is no way to argue that it is.
Because tongues is a mystery between the believer and God it is necessary to point out that one of the biggest defenses of tongues is that it is only of the Devil. (David Steward, Jesus-) There is a way to now if some is of the Devil or not, according to 1 Corinthians 12:3. “ So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. “(NLT)
If a born again believer is speaking in tongues, he cannot curse Jesus’ name. However, if he does, he is not speaking by the Holy Spirit. Luke shows that if the believer asks God for the Holy Spirit he will not give the believer evil. Nor will he give you the Devil.
11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Luke 11:11-13
David M. Pizzimenti in his book Tongues Scriptural Answer to Common Objections says “In the Scripture Jesus gave an answer that will dispel all fear and apprehension.” The answer that Jesus gives ensures the safety of receiving the Holy Spirit without fear of having a demon putting in its own spirit. Knowing that the Devil doesn’t know what you’re saying. However tongues is not a means to battle the Devil. “I don’t do anything I don’t have scripture evidence for. ..“ (Hagin p. 252). If anything is not backed up by scripture it is unwise to follow it. Instead tongues are a means of spiritual edification. Jude 20 says. “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
How do we know that this scripture is talking about praying in tongues? Let’s take another look at 1 Corinthians 14:4 “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…” The word edify means to “build up”. So from this we know that tongues are for building us up. Which means it is not building up others. Which is what Paul is speaking of in 1 Corinthians 14: he says “But in a church meeting I would rather speak five understandable words to help others than ten thousand words in a unknown language. “(1 Corinthians 14:19) In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul is correcting the believers because they all came together in a Church speaking tongues which would confuse anyone who does not speak in tongues. In vs 40 Paul says, “But be sure that everything is done properly and in Order.” (1 Corinthians 14:40) If things are done in a orderly way and tongues are interpreted when needed, than it is correct; otherwise tongues is there to edify to build up you.
Tongues have ceased! The mistake many have brought themselves to believe is that tongues has ceased. But evidence shows tongues are still active in the churches today. Let’s take a look at both tongues having ceased and is tongues for everyone because they go hand in hand. Taking another look at Jude this time vs 1, “I am writing to all who have been called by God the Father, who loves you and keeps you safe in the care of Jesus Christ.” Jude was speaking to all who are called by God which is all believers and in verse 20 says “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,” So what Jude is saying is that all believers should pray in the power of the Holy Ghost!
Mark 16:17-18 says “These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages, they will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick and they will be healed.”
In this Mark also says that these signs will accompany all those who believe. One of those being they will speak in new languages.
Now let’s take a look at 1 Corinthians 12:
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that[a] you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into[c] one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be?
20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, 24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best[d] gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.
Often readers want to say that Paul here is talking about how tongues aren’t for everyone. But what Paul is talking about is that tongues are not for the whole church to use in a church meeting.
“Tongue speaking is not something that edifies the church!” (Ian Boyne, Speaking in tongues)
It’s there to edify you.

What is tongues?

There are two different types of tongues. 1 “dialektos"/dialect many languages of man – is spoken of at the day of Pentecost as the spirit of God fell on them allowing them all to understand each other’s languages. 2. Is “Glossolalia” found in 1 Corinthians 12 as a Spiritual Gift but also in 1 Corinthians 14:2 when it says “For if your gift is the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking to God but not to people for they will not be able to understand you, you will be talking by the power of the Spirit but it’ll all be mysterious.”

Has tongues ceased?

In 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 does tell us tongues, prophecy, and knowledge will cease. Many believe it has already done so. But if 1 Corinthians 13:10 tells us “But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” The Bible can’t be that which is perfect because it is talking about the spiritual gifts and only that who gives us the spiritual gifts can be perfect. This clearly shows us that these things will not be done away with until Jesus comes back. For that is when partial things will no longer be needed. And to show us this 1 Corinthians 13:12 does show us “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” That’ll it’ll be face to face that we see Christ before these things will cease. In other words tongues will not cease until they have fulfilled their purpose.

What is their purpose?

The purpose of tongues falls within the purpose of the Spiritual gifts. What is this purpose of the spiritual gifts? You find the gifts purpose is to build up the body for without one gift the body functions differently. But tongues is also there to edify you. “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself” 1 Corinthians 14:4.
When you speak in front of the Church with tongues and it is to be interpreted that is so it can edify the Congregation.

Is tongues for everyone/can everyone receive it?

As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied. Acts 19: 5-6

This scripture shows us that Paul laid his hands on 12 men and they began to prophecy and speak in tongues. Because the Holy Spirit, the anointing came on them.

Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message. The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Acts 10: 44-46

This shows us that anyone can receive it.
Then Peter asked, 47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?”
When someone begins to speak in other tongues can you really object to its existence?
I have heard it asked. How can you be sure it isn’t just emotional babbling? That’s the same as what the crowd in Acts 2 saying they were just drunk!
The deal is they are either speaking tongues or not. If the Holy Spirit is on them its tongues.

Take a look at all 9 Spiritual Gifts to really answer the question 7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[c] 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

I might write about this later to better understand this but can we not all use each of these..Can we all not be wise..Proverbs..Jeremiah…different places says we can all we have to do is ask. That is the same for all the gifts we must ask. We aren’t going to have the full extent of the gifts themselves but rather the anointing that comes from them as the Holy Spirit falls on us. But you must ask and believe which is how faith works.

Theres more I can say more verses I could use but I don’t think I need to right now maybe I will add more as I go.

The answer is 'YES'

But you have to meet Him. John the Baptist said "I baptise you with water..........but when He arrives He shall Baptise you with the Holy Ghost"

Have you met Him? "Ask and you shall receive,....Knock and it will be opened.......Seek and you will find.........To what do these questions relate? The answer is....... knowing Him.

Very nice Brother Quenton!! When asked, I always just say tell you what, read the book of Acts,if tongues is for you,and you want it,you will recieve it.If you do not believe tongues is for you, then you will not have to concern yourself with it! But I do agree, here is fact from the Word,1 Cor 14:2 Somtimes in English we can run out of the words we want to say, Thank God for tongues!! and like Paul says I can say as well!! 1 Cor 14:18!! But in the Church!! Prophecy is better! Good Word brother!! I enjoyed reading it!!

praying in the Spirit.Romans 8:26 teaches us, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” First, Romans 8:26 states that it is the Spirit who “groans,” not believers. Second, Romans 8:26 states that the “groans” of the Spirit “cannot be expressed.” The very essence of speaking in tongues is uttering words.
1 Corinthians 14:4-17 and verse 14 especially: “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.” First Corinthians 14:14 distinctly mentions “praying in tongues.” What does this mean? And how is it different than speaking in tongues?Or is praying in the Spirit, praying in tongues ?

Amen
It took me a while to believe and only after i gave up trying, Did i speak in tongues! We cannot force things ! we accept by faith ! And it is though our spirit , we speak in tongues!

Praying in Tongues.......

What does this mean? And how is it different than speaking in tongues?Or is praying in the Spirit, praying in tongues

Jud 1:20
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

Hello James!!!

There were Nine operational gifts mentioned for church setting by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said we will Worship God in Truth and in Spirit.

So, praying in the Spirit is not limited to just speaking in a unknown language... Though it can be in a different language unknown, it's not limited to that.

Romans 8:26 does define praying in tongues. For natural prayer is very limited in knowledge, and things we know. Tongues overcome that. In this our heart is searched, and our motives are moved out of the way as the Holy Spirit makes intercessions for us and the saints according to the will of God.

In this operation, all things work together for the good..... They work out, and often do not change around suddenly.

Some of the answers to our prayers involve people on many different levels, and things have to come to place for our Good. These things we would not even know in the natural sense...but God does with His Spirit.

Groaning:
In all my years of praying in tongues, and speaking prophecy, I have Not experienced a lot of that groaning...... I know certain circles the Pastor will get on stage and groan as if someone is sawing a arm off..

Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

Some believe that there is actual groaning because it's deep intercession in which there is no speech for.

My experience has been that it's mostly just all flesh. However when Praying in the Spirit the language can change completely, cans sound like stammering or even groaning some....

I'm not sure why Christians, or those who call themselves that, make this "speaking in tongues" thing an issue at all. Makes no sense to me.

It's like, out of all the issues germane to my spirituality, THAT'S the one that a certain crowd wants to talk about. It's just lost on me. I pretty much have learned to tune out those conversations...and refocus the discussion on things that actually matter.

Wisdom is the principle thing.......

Call themselves Christians?? Things that matter??

Wisdom would dictate that Posting something like you did S.I.E in a thread where everyone is excited about it, and thinks it's true would not be the wise thing to do..

Here I have learned to pick my battles so that others think I am not completely uninformed, Staying out of the topics I know little about...

Be blessed Brother..........

Jesus Is Lord.

wisdom?

I thought this was a thread, not a blog posting. In other words, a call for discussion. And...if it's not, then I was deceived by the subject line of this thread, which actually asked a question...and I weighed-in on that question.

And since I'm writing this far, I'll weigh-in further: I'm happy for all of you who do this and get a lot out of it personally, in your personal relationship with God. I don't get it, but that clearly doesn't matter, nor should it, to you.

But, if it's truly meant for purely a personal thing between you all, and your Savior...then why is anyone here telling me about it? Why is this OP trying to "sell" me on the idea that it's a good idea, or a good thing. And furthermore, if it's truly personal, and nothing more...then why have I heard it shouted out publicly in Church from time to time, and why --- as a kid --- did I find it really confusing and relatively distrurbing?

Bottom line is that it makes no sense to a kid. It confuses them. Depending on the kid, it might even frighten them a bit.

And we all know what Jesus calls us to be: it's the kids that get Jesus. We are to come to him as kids (in our hearts).

BM: you continue to assume incorrectly about my life, and I'm not sure why. I've been well exposed to tongues, and had a LOT of spiritual "socialization" around that subject matter. For decades in fact. So, I suppose it's your defensiveness that causes you to tell me I "know little about" this or that.

It's because of what I know, what I've seen, and what I've experienced surrounding this topic that I am...well, let's just say, skeptical.

To me, it's an irrelevant thing. Except for the fact that it's annoying when it's brought up, and I have to explain myself to the "2nd blessing" believers.

I have found, and I believe, that tongues...for many that "use" them, or "believe" in them...is a very effective placebo. And don't underestimate placebo's. They may be nothing...but if your mind believes they're something other than nothing...then they can have a real effect.

Again...perhaps for many here who have a personal tongues prayer language that they enjoy in their personal relationship with their Savior, it may be, in fact, a real thing...who's to know? Certainly not myself. And again, if that's been a blessing for all 'yall, then you should by all means carry on with it!

To me, I've found a way to make it into a rounding error, because it really is irrelevant to me.

actually there is a whole bunch of scripture on it........

Bottom line is that it makes no sense to a kid. It confuses them. Depending on the kid, it might even frighten them a bit

No more than hearing their neighbor speak in Spanish, and I know several young kids..in their teens that speak in tongues.. The operation of God never frightens Children.

and I have found the subjects in the bible that don't interest me, or I feel a wall between me and that subject, that is the very subject I have to humble myself on and learn...

Be blessed!!!

Jesus Is Lord.

No more than hearing their neighbor speak in Spanish.

There is some truth to that, actually.

Let's say you only spoke English...and you went to Mexico City -- alone -- and stayed in the thick of the city where it was pretty much dominated by indigenous people (no tourists, etc.) --- how would you feel? What would you find yourself thinking or doing?

You would simply find yourself isolated, perhaps bored, confused at first, and ultimately...you would start to pick up books or find your own adventures at the beach or countryside, or whatever. In other words, you would not feel "invited" into what's going on, and you wouldn't feel like you have a venue to become "part of it".

It would become largely irrelevant to you.

Where your metaphor breaks down, is that NO ONE knows what is actually being said when it comes to tongues, except for the person who may do the interpretation. And at that point, you have to believe that this person is interpreting the language correctly. Which may be true, or may not. Who knows. No one could ever verify it anyways!

And furthermore....if the "impact" of the tongues is felt by the English interpretation...then why the heck did someone have to speak in tongues first, to get there? Does the "riddle factor" cause the English interpretation to be more believed or something, by the listener? Is it somehow more mysterious, etc.? Does it somehow "feel" more supernatural?

Again...I don't get it. As for the "out loud / in Church" stuff...I think it's usually (but not always) smoke and mirrors.

I know several young kids..in their teens that speak in tongues.. The operation of God never frightens Children.

BM - have you ever seen Jesus Camp, the movie? If you have Netflix instant...you can pull it up on there.

Yes, I knew several young kids that speak in tongues too. In fact, I grew up in those "Jesus Camp" settings...and I was one of those teenage kids who spoke in tongues, back in the day too. So, yeah, I knew them too. I was one.

The idea that this doesn't frighten kids is not correct. Perhaps you never were exposed to this as a kid. I was.

umm

Romans mentions we no not what we should pray for.. and praying in the Spirit is mentioned as fixing that issue... though as I pointed out... Praying in the Spirit can mean a known tongue but words directly from God.

Where your metaphor breaks down, is that NO ONE knows what is actually being said when it comes to tongues, except for the person who may do the interpretation.

In all my time around tongues.. I have only met one person that God used on a constant bases to interpret..For the most part... I think it's best to leave the gift at home and not fit for most church settings as everything must be done decent and in order... "I said most"

BM - have you ever seen Jesus Camp, the movie? If you have Netflix instant...you can pull it up on there.

My son has netflix....and my wife did as a child.. but as the years went by.. she lost track and got taught wrong thinking it was just her speaking or the devil as she was told..... Time to brush the dust off them tongues then, eh???

Jesus Is Lord.

How could praying in tongues be a private prayer language if it is to be interpreted (1 Corinthians 14:13-17)? How could praying in tongues be for self-edification when Scripture says that the spiritual gifts are for the edification of the church, not the self (1 Corinthians 12:7). How can praying in tongues be a private prayer language if the gift of tongues is a "sign to unbelievers" (1 Corinthians 14:22)? The Bible makes it clear that not everyone possesses the gift of tongues (1 Corinthians 12:11, 28-30). How could tongues be a gift for self-edification if not every believer can possess it? Do we not all need to be edified? If Paul prayed in an actual tongue, his spirit prayed. If his spirit prayed, then he knew what he was praying, for "what man knoweth the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him?" (I Cor. 2:11). But his understanding was unfruitful. Some have said this means he did not understand; but this is transparently wrong. Unfruitful means not bearing fruit. So if in the assembly I pray in a tongue unknown to the assembly, though I understand myself, yet my understanding is not bearing fruit in the understanding of others.Praying and singing with the understanding has reference to using words that others can understand, so that the unlearned can say Amen when another gives thanks. If he does not understand, he cannot do this. It will be noted that praying, blessing, and giving of thanks are practically synonymous here. One may give thanks well, with both he and God understanding what he says, but "the other is not edified."

Well here is my two cents, I would not consider anything that has the ability to personally strengthen one in the Lord Jesus as "something that doesn't matter".

If Christians would use this spiritual ability more, than they wouldn't need the hours and hours of counseling from professional ministers as much. I also think we would see Christians with much more faith in the supernatural gifts and many would demonstrate the character of Christ more fully.

Preach it!!!!!!!

Thanks for the link, BM. For some reason, when I clicked through on this link, it allowed me only to see the first page of that thread, and not page 2 / 3, etc. It's probably only the first page you were referring to anyways...so it's probably ok.

Based on what jiggyfly wrote, I have to say I fully accept that! The "gift of tongues", as Paul spoke of in Acts 2:7-11, as jiggyfly points out, is actually another language that is a sign to unbelievers, whereby they are hearing their own native tongue being spoken to them from someone who does not speak their language at all.

How cool! That is wonderful. I have no problem with this whatsoever.

That said, I do have some questions! First: I'm not sure why there would need to be the "gift of interpretation" if the one using the "gift of tongues" is actually speaking in a language already known to the "unbelieving" listeners. ? What's there to interpret, if all the unbelieving listeners are hearing their native language spoken?

So...here's the thing in my growing up in a charasmatic / pentecostal church: tongues were never used in this way! In fact, I've never witness tongues to be used that way by anyone in the charasmatic / pentecostal camp! Have you?

When I've witnessed the use of tongues spoken out loud...it was not used as a "sign to unbelievers" the way Paul spoke of in Acts 2:7-11. It was spoke to believers, and spoken in some jibberish that no one in the room understood, but then there would be someone who would then speak something in English, which was believed by the members of the Church to be an interpretation of the jibberish spoken prior.

Again, that's not the model Paul spoke of. And again, to a kid, it's confusing, perhaps disturbing, and given enough time, simply becomes irrelevant.

So -- for anyone who has a personal prayer language whereby they might use something other than their native tongue to pray personally to God....if they benefit from that, then I'm happy for them! Also, for any instance where an Acts 2:7-11 might take place, that's awesome too!

But for the way I've seen it demonstrated in Church, and the way your average pentecostal / charasmatic groups use it? I don't get it. It draws me farther from God, not nearer.

Bible says

That said, I do have some questions! The bible says.. The tongue is unknown, unless someone there is to interpret.

Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
1Co 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying

I have only met one person that God used on a consistent bases to interpret someones tongues.. Not saying I missed a bunch... just one that I have known..

We pray in tongues on Wednesday night. It's directed and ordered and everyone that shows up knows the operation of it... though some still pray in English...

Sunday service we very seldom hear someone speaking in tongues.. The service is to learn, and others to hear about the Lord... Not time for everyone doing their own thing...

Paul said we can pray to interpret our own tongues.. This would be at home (Alone) where we don't disrupt anyone...

1Co 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
1Co 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful

Sadly, in many Charismatic Churches, everyone seems to be jockeying themselves in position to show everyone else how spiritual they are, and it's a mad house...I have been to more than a few of these just visiting..... I am not saying they are all like that... but you get the sense that those who are there and don't understand, are not that important..... just my opinion only...

Jesus Is Lord.
