Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward [man] is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory, 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
Paul knew his time on earth was short. If he didn't die from an ailment, beatings, drowning, or starvation, he knew he would die for His faith. Even so, he didn't lose heart, going so far as to refer to extreme hardship as "light and momentary" in light of the fact that the internal man was being renewed day by day.
If you're over the age of thirty-five, you probably know exactly what Paul was talking about when he said you're wasting away outwardly--sore knees, a bad back, shoulder pain, on and on it goes. But, praise God, the more a Christian wastes away outwardly, the more he's being renewed inwardly as the Holy Spirit transforms him.
Is this true in your life, experimentally? If so, rejoice in God's faithfulness. If not, today is the day of your salvation. Turn from your sin, and begin to experience internal renewal.
Prayer: Lord, I often find it difficult to separate the way I feel physically from the way I feel spiritually. But here, Paul explains that as my body fails, I can praise You for internal renewal. May it be so, Lord.
