[He that is] slow to anger [is] better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Proverbs 16:32
For a split second, just before you either act or react to an event that might make you angry, you have the wherewithal to be measured and restrained, rather than erupt in anger. You might blow right past that internal check, feeling justified, but in so doing, you’ll be showing an inability to rule your own spirit.
Being slow to answer shows the emotional fortitude it would have required to take a city back in the day. How so? The person who conquered a city overcame serious obstacles—the weather, a multitude of weapons, snares, and defenders. But the person who rules his spirit in the heat of the moment overcomes an internal battle—one in which the flesh makes demands but is vanquished by the spirit.
Are you quick to anger? If so, then you have some work to do, and that’s okay. The Holy Spirit is at work in you. The next time you’re tempted to display anger, view that internal check you feel as a gift from God and obey it. Use a soft answer to turn away wrath and the situation will become much less volatile.
