And David inquired of God, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?" And the LORD said to him, "Go up, and I will give them into your hand." 1 Chronicles 14:10 ESV
There’s more to the passage than “David inquired.” It was a mix of strategy and military action. It was a desire to win. Yeah, there’s more to the story, yet four words make this story more than an impulse decision. David inquired of God.
This king had fought and won wars, but he had also written psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. He had a close relationship with God, and leaving Him out of this story made no sense to David. Instead of guessing, David inquired. Instead of assuming, David inquired. Instead of ignoring, David inquired.
It’s easy to leave someone out of a decision, especially when you think that person would disagree with what you want to do. You like to find people who agree with you, even when you think you might be wrong. So find a spirit in tune with God, a heart that wants His best, and a mind willing to change if that’s what God wants—and inquire.
Bring God into your plans, and allow Him to veto what He knows is a waste of your time and energy. Give Him every chance possible to answer your inquiry.
Prayer: Father, when I pray, I’m inquiring—or at least I hope I am. When I just talk to You about my day and the people who need Your help, I’m not doing enough to gain wisdom. Help me ask for Your answers to questions that seem too hard for me.
