For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 NLT

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Created by the labor movement, it celebrates the contributions of the working class.

Solomon wrote about labor” “So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work” (Ecclesiastes 3:22). He promoted the value of settling in and finding satisfaction in the efforts that consume most of every day. But Solomon also saw the importance of relaxation: “People should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God” (Ecclesiastes 3:13). His point is that there is a time for both, “a time for everything” (3:1).

Paul wrote that there are not only different times for things but also different ways to accomplish things: “There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us” (12 Corinthians 12:5-6). Understanding the different ways and times can create unity and encourage the kind of wise living today’s readings champion, the kind of living the psalmist celebrated: “You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head” (Psalm 139:5).

Prayer: Father, help me appreciate the different times and ways You do things so that I might encourage and support the people who labor for You and rest in You.
