“Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; in no way alarmed by your opponents—which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.” (Philippians 1:27-30 NASB)

When we profess faith in Jesus Christ, that profession of faith in Christ should result in us dying with Christ to sin and us being reborn of the Spirit of God to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness, in walks of obedience to his commands, in holy living. We also, by faith in Jesus, enter into a covenant of marriage to him, with him as our husband, and with us (his church) as his bride. And this is a covenant very similar to the covenant of marriage that a Christian man and woman should take to one another.

For when a man and a woman, who both profess faith in Jesus Christ, join together as one in marriage, they promise to give up their single lifestyles and to now be committed to the purity of the marriage relationship. And the two become one flesh. And the two are to hold on tight to one another, and to be faithful to one another, to love one another sacrificially, and to serve alongside one another in a holy union (partnership) of marriage, with the man as the head, but with his life-partner beside him, with them working together as one, with both promising to be faithful to each other.

And this is a lifelong commitment, or it should be, which should not be broken. For it should be based on love and faithfulness, and the unity of the husband and the wife, which God has joined together, so “let no one separate” (Matthew 19:4-6). And there should be mutual love and respect between the two. But sadly, they don’t all turn out that way. And in some cases, one or both of them never were faithful to the marriage. They mouthed the words of love and devotion, but they continued to live as though they were not married, continually living in adultery against spouse.

Marriage and Moral Purity: [Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-9; Mark 7:20-23; Mark 10:6-9; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 1 Corinthians 6:9-20; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 5:3,15-33; Colossians 3:18-19; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; Hebrews 13:4; James 4:4; 1 Peter 3:1-7; 2 Peter 2:13-19]

And the Scriptures teach us that there is a parallel between the marriage between and a man and a woman and that of our marriage to Christ, which is what should take place if our faith in Christ is biblical faith. And Christ is our husband, and the followers of Christ are his bride. And Jesus is always going to do his part because he is God and he is completely faithful to all his promises. And in a physical marriage the husband is to love his wife and give himself up for her, similar to how Christ loves us and gave himself up for us. And as the bride of Christ, we are to honor, respect, and obey our Lord.

So, paralleling a marriage between a man and a woman over to the marriage between Christ and his church, just like one spouse may speak the vows but then never be faithful to their spouse, there are people who profess faith in Christ with their lips, but they do not carry it through in how they live. So just like the unfaithful spouse lives as though they are not married, the unfaithful professer of faith in Christ also never changes and continues living in sin and not in obedience to the Lord. So, in both cases, it is like they have never been married, which makes the commitment mute.

And the Scriptures teach if all we do is speak faith in Christ but we never die with him to sin and we never follow him in obedience, in practice, and so we remain as though we are “single,” and not married to Christ, it nullifies that marriage relationship to Christ. For, in truth, that marriage to Christ never existed. So, to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ is to have that life-long commitment to Christ to purity of devotion to our Lord as our only Lord, striving for the faith of the gospel, and not moved away from the Lord out of alarm due to the opposition that we will face.

Gospel:[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]

For if we are true followers of Christ, sharing with others the truth of the gospel as taught by Jesus and by his New Testament apostles, in the correct biblical context, we are going to face opposition. And that opposition could come from family members or other professing Christians who do not accept the full gospel message, or who do not accept our walks of faith in surrender to our Lord, or who may themselves be living in sin and in adultery and in sexual immorality, and so we are an offense to them. But this should not shake us up, for we have been granted by God to suffer for His sake.

Seek the Lord

Musical Instrumentation by Mark Bradley

“Come to Me all you who thirst; come to waters.
Listen to Me, and eat what’s good today,
And your soul will delight in richest of fare.
Give ear to Me, and you will live.
I have made an eternal covenant with you.
Wash in the blood of the Lamb.”

Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him.
Let the wicked forsake his way, in truth.
Let him turn to the Lord, and he will receive mercy.
Freely, God pardons him.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,”
declares the Lord, our God.

“My word that goes out of My mouth is truthful.
It will not return to Me unfulfilled.
My word will accomplish all that I desire,
And achieve the goal I intend.
You will go in joy and be led forth in peace.
The mountains will burst into song… before you,
And all of the trees clap their hands.”
