“If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or the wife you embrace or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which neither you nor your fathers have known, some of the gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other, you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him.” (Deuteronomy 13:6-8 ESV)

This is Old Covenant teaching, and we who believe in Jesus Christ are not under the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, sacrificial, purification, circumcision, dietary, and Sabbath laws. But we are not lawless. For under the New Covenant we still have to obey our Lord’s commands that he has for us, which are written down for us in the New Testament via the teachings of Jesus Christ and of his New Testament apostles. So we can still learn from the Old Testament. We just have to read it in light of the New Testament.

So, what is meant today by “other gods.” This refers to a god which is not God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit – the creator of the universe. So it is considered an idol. And an idol is anything or anyone that we put in place of or above God, and that is worshipped as though it is or they are our gods. It is anything to which, or anyone to whom we give our time, hearts, affections, conformity, reverence, veneration, loyalty, devotion, fidelity, allegiance, and surrender, especially above God and/or in place of God.

So, these gods/idols can be other humans. They can be people of power, authority, and/or prominence in the gatherings of the church, in the governments of nations, in the entertainment, music, and/or sports industries, in the medical profession, or CEOs of corporations, and the like. Or they can be things like money, possessions, prestige, power, influence, popularity, fame, talents, intellect, and knowledge. Or they can be religious practices and religious idols of worship and religious rituals and traditions.

They can also be sinful practices such as lying, cheating, stealing, bearing false witness, slander, hatred, violence, drunkenness, wild living, sexual immorality and idolatry, adultery, unforgiveness, resentment, and bitterness. For anyone professing the name of Jesus who puts his sin above or in place of God and God’s commandments has made sin their idol, their god. Any sin that is against God, which is deliberate and habitual, is a god/idol in the lives of those who embrace their sins, and who will not obey God, in practice.

All of us are responsible for our own lives, though, regardless of what others try to persuade us to do. Yes, those who lead others into sin are guilty of that sin. But if we yield to the temptation to sin, because someone has pushed us or manipulated us into sinning against God, we are still guilty of sinning against our Lord. And we must turn away from that sin and now follow the Lord in obedience, and not keep going back to the same sin over again. For if sin is our practice, we will not inherit eternal life with God.

And “another god” that is being so pushed in our culture today is a false gospel combined with a false faith. And there are all sorts of people in this world, in the gatherings of “churches,” and on the internet, who are doing the hard sell to get people to accept an altered and diluted gospel message which requires lip service to God only – no repentance, no death to sin, no walks of obedience to God and to his commands required at all, or they are mentioned more as a suggestion (optional) and still not as required of God.

So, no matter who might try to tempt us into believing in this cheapened and altered gospel, believing that a mere profession of faith in Jesus alone assures us salvation from sin and eternal life with God, we must not give in to them! I don’t care who they are or how well they are liked or respected in the Christian community. The truth of God’s Word is what we are to believe, and we must read the Scriptures in their full and appropriate context, too. Many lies are being spread by teaching Scriptures outside their context.

But Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

This is what the Lord says to you:
Fear not, for I have chosen you.
I have summoned you by your name.
You are mine. I died, you to save.

When you go through your trials, so deep,
I will be with you; you will not sink.
You are so precious always to me.
Trust in your Lord, Savior and King.

This is what the Lord says to you:
He who gave salvation to you;
Who delivered you from your sin;
Takes your burdens now upon Him:

Forget the former things of your life.
Give of your heart not now up to strife.
See all the new things I have for you.
Walk in vict’ry. Trust in what’s true.

This is what the Lord says to you:
He who made you; who will help you:
Do not fear what humans may do.
Walk in freedom. Follow what’s true.

Drink of my Spirit given for you.
Trust in my mercy, for I love you.
I have a plan for all of your life.
Follow my ways. Do what is right.
