I am giving you these instructions, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies made earlier about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, having faith and a good conscience. (1 Timothy 1:18-19 NRSV)
St. Paul once told his young friend Timothy to "fight the good fight." Now he wasn't talking about fighting like we think of fighting. He wasn't talking about boxing or karate or any of those things. Fighting is not something God wants us to do.
When St. Paul told Timothy to fight the good fight that was just an expression to tell him to give his best in serving Christ. Just like a boxer goes out and gives his best to defeat his opponent, so the Christian goes out to give his or her best to defeat everything that is evil in the world. So, fight the good fight! Not in a boxing ring, but somewhere better. Any place people are being mean to other people, any place people are doing things that are not right, any place people are forgetting that they are children of God, then you stand up for those things that are good. Fight the good fight. Be a real champion for God!
Loving God, show me the way of being a real champion for you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
