Hunger Vs Famine
By semere abiyo
It is healthy to be hungry. If you have good appetite, you should be thankful. Hunger is a good thing as long as you have something to eat. It is a blessing. Famine, on the other hand, is when you are hungry and there is nothing to eat. You have seen all the horrible scenes on TV of people affected by famine.
The Bible speaks of spiritual famine in the book of Amos. It says, “I will send a famine through the land—not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.” Amos 8:11.
Why would the Lord do that?
This last week on his one month anniversary, my son, Gideon, was so restless and wants to be breast fed all the time. We called the doctor to find out why our calm son would turn out to be restless just when we think he is settling very well and that he is a very calm boy. I was fascinated by what the doctor said. She said after the first month the baby needs to increase his milk supply. And the way the milk glands work is that the more the baby sucks the more glands open. So, the reason why he was restless for a couple of days is so that he can keep himself busy opening more milk glands for his increased need. She also said that we can expect the same thing to happen at the three month mark because he will need to increase his milk supply again at that point. Do you know when the mother’s milk runs out? For the most part, it runs out when the baby stops sucking. As long as the baby is sucking the milk keeps flowing. Also, the more he sucks the more milk the glands start to produce. This is a perfect analogy for the hunger Vs famine point I am trying to make. As soon as you stop being hungry, you are calling for a famine.
Now I know what Peter meant when he said, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” 1 Peter 2:2
“Blessed are those who hunger” Amos 8:11
