And they told him, "We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. Numbers 13:27-28 ESV

Upon the Israelites’ arrival at the Promised Land, Moses sent spies from each tribe to explore the land. For forty days, the spies searched out the condition of the land, the fortifications of the cities, the stature of the residents, and the food growing there.

Numbers 13:23 says, “And they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs.”

Food wasn’t going to be a problem. However, the cities were well fortified, and the residents were huge. The majority of the spies looked at the challenges and spread fear amongst their tribes.

The residents of the Promised Land were definitely bigger and stronger than the Israelites, but God was bigger and stronger still.

When you take on a new challenge, don’t ignore the problems you’ll face, but trust God’s ability to help you face them. If God’s promises are overshadowed by a “however,” your confidence in God is too low.

Prayer: God, replace my fears of inadequacy with trust in Your ability to help me.
