Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Eph 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people.
Luke 18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
1 Thes 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
When we receive Christ the most important thing we receive is the gift of the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13).
After we are saved the only thing we have to do is live in this Spirit. Everything else in our Christian life come from our living in the Spirit, including freedom from the flesh. Our daily living, our decisions, our praying, our fellowship, our service, our worship, must all be done in Spirit (John 4:24).
We can walk in the Spirit by praying, rejoicing, and giving thanks always (1 Thes 5:16-18).
When Paul wrote to the Thessalonians in 1 Thess, the church was only about 2-3 years old, so it is a good "how to" manual for new believers.
Always rejoicing, praying and giving thanks, is God's will for us and especially for new believers.
God's will for us after we are saved is that we live in the Spirit (1 Thess 5:16-18, Gal 5:16). To say this another way, is to say that God's will for us after we are saved is for us to abide in Him.
What Paul calls living in the Spirit, is what Jesus calls "abiding in Him". To live in the Spirit is the same thing as abiding in Christ (John 15:5,7).
Paul never met Jesus in the flesh, but he knew the Spirit of Christ and had relationship with the Spirit. The result is that we will bear fruit.
For most of our life we live in ourself and by ourself and do things by ourself. After we receive Christ we must live in, by and do by Christ, that is, by the Holy Spirit within us.
We know what it means to live in our thoughts, or emotions, or in our self. To live in the Spirit is to have our whole being dwelling on, focussed on, and occupied by the person of Christ. The best way to achieve this is through continual rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks.
Having saving faith in Christ is not the same as abiding in Him. To abide in Him is to have our living and dwelling in Him. This implies we need to be continually in fellowship with Him, just as He was in continual fellowship with the Father. When we abide in Christ we also abide in the Father (John 17:20-25).
Living in this way will partly fulfill the prayer of Jesus in John 17:21 and the result is oneness with God and oneness with other believers (John 17:21). Religions, sects, disunity and divisions in the church is a direct result of not abiding in Christ, or living in the Spirit.
Not living in the Spirit will result in us becoming religious with a veil covering our hearts. This is because with the Spirit comes freedom (2 Cor 3:16-17). The Spirit of truth removes the veil of falsehoods that shadow our heart. These falsehoods, the veil, is our own human concepts, opinions, thoughts, traditions that stop us seeing the truth (or how things really are, from God's point of view) (Matt 16:23). In other words, failing to pray, rejoice and thank often will cause us to become hardened. We will turn to our self and attempt to please God and satisfy ourselves by our own self-efforts, mental, emotional, or will -power, rather than the Spirit. Not living in the Spirit results in bondage to our self (and all its lusts, compulsions, self-righteousness etc), but living in the Spirit results in a righteous, joyful and peaceful life (Rom 14:17).
