Why do we get depressed?
God's Word says that "Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression" (Prov 12:25).
So, if you have depression, it is caused by anxiety and worry in your heart. Everybody knows the saying "don't worry, be happy" but when we are in the midst of depression, its impossible to "be happy" on our own.
Sometimes, the anxiety in our heart is due to decisions that we have made wrongly because we wanted our own way - such as buying a car that we couldn't afford (and the bank wants to repossess it), or not spending the time to study for an exam and failing. Remember, Jesus commands us by saying "if anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me" (Matt 16:24). So, if we have sinned, then we must repent and ask for forgiveness.
Of course, there are times when we are anxious about something that we did not cause - for example, when parents are getting a divorce or a grandparent is in hospital. But if we examine ourselves, we will realize that this anxiousness is actually because we are not trusting Jesus Christ to settle us and we aren't allowing "the peace of God to guard our hearts".
How do we get rid of it?
We must "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Phil 4:6)
Whatever you are worried about, the first step is to give thanks to Jesus Christ in all things. Even when thrown in prison, the apostles praised and worshiped Jesus Christ (Acts 16:25). So, no matter what is happening around (or to) you, you must remember to thank Jesus for His sacrifice and all that He has done for you. But sometimes, our heart and mind will not feel like giving thanks - so you have the power to command them by praying:
"Lord Jesus, I want to trust You completely. I do not want to be anxious for anything. I know that I cannot do this on my own so I receive your grace and power to overcome this. In Jesus Name, I cast out every evil spirit of worry, depression, anxiousness and confusion. I receive Your joy and Your peace that surpasses all understanding. I command my heart and mind to trust Jesus Christ completely and to give thanks to Jesus Christ in all things.".
Then, begin to sing praise and worship aloud. When you begin to feel settled, pray and ask Jesus Christ for what you need. If you don't feel settled, keep saying "Blood of Jesus" over and over again until you feel a release.
God bless and Peace of Christ!
