God's ways as revealed in the Bible are so mysterious and sometimes confusing that the common reader does not always understand, especially on a first or even numerous readings. In fact very time you read from the Bible you seem to get another message. Most Christians on the planet never take the Bible literally the rest say they do. But actually they do not and that is normally what differentiates the various Christian sects.
When you take something figuratively you might still have a weakened spiritual lesson but the whole context is changed and people can easily lose faith in the Bible as being the “living” word of God. For instance the scripture tells us about instantaneous creation, the earth is flat, that it has pillars, and will not be moved (Gen 1, Ps 93:1, Ps 96:10, 1 Sam 2:8, Job 9:6) and great sea monsters are set to guard the edge of the sea (Job 41, Ps 104:26) etc.
Are they literal events or figurative speech?
Most Christians were brought up to believe that God created Adam on the first day and Eve was created from his rib as an afterthought so that Adam would not be lonely. Why did God forget to give Adam a mate when he gave one to all other animals? What are we missing here?
Genesis 2:22 “ And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”
What is interesting though is that the origin of this storey about Adams rib and Eve is thought to be taken from a Sumerian myth whereby Ninhursag created Ninti from Enki’s rib.
