But these tribes were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors. They worshiped the gods of the nations that God had destroyed. 1 Chronicles 5:25 NLT
The scripture verse above provides another cautionary tale about the struggle involved when people reject God’s message. Men can turn away from what God says based on a lack of understanding, but they can also reject what they read because they simply don’t want to believe it. For example, God says not to lie, but a man who knows he has lied might want to dismiss His message on the subject because acknowledging it leaves him knowing he is guilty of the sin of lying.
In this verse, it was whole tribes of people who were found to be unfaithful to God. That’s bad enough, but they followed up their unfaithfulness with the worship of gods who had been vanquished by God. It’s like they were telling God, “You beat them, but I worship them anyway.”
It’s easy to read that stark contrast and conclude that the people were clouded in their judgment, delusional in their thinking—or were poster children for foolishness.
It remains true that the way you think and the way God thinks are different. He already knows how You think and what’s in your heart. He invites you to learn how He thinks.
Prayer: Father, I don’t want to be counted among the unfaithful. Help me adjust my thinking to Yours. Help me trust You enough to take what I’m learning and trust You with my whole heart.
