how does one know when the holy spirit is talking ?

Luk 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

1. He always agrees with the Word of God.
2. He does not speak into your mind but into your innermost being. Some call it a gut feeling when they are being moved upon.
3. He will always lead you into death to the old self and the glorifying of the Father.
Do not be afraid my friend, God is watching over you.

Mat 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Mat 7:8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Mat 7:9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
Mat 7:10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
Mat 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Boanerges is correct. The Holy Spirit will always agree with the Word of God. If you hear a "voice" and it says something that goes against scripture, then it is most certainly not the Holy Spirit, because God never goes against His word. This is also why studying scripture is very important. It is always good to study so that the Word will be in you whenever the devil attempts to deceive or tempt you.

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26)

The Holy Spirit brings the scriptures we read to our remembrance as well. I know of many times when I was by myself, fighting a temptation, and He brought a scripture to my mind.

Hope this helps!

We do hear Him in our flesh mind. But it true He does not ever go against the Bible. Nothing He will not teach us if we can accept it as truth?
As we grow? Then we can accept more and more.

Joh_10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Listen sometimes we are not sure it the LORD we hearing. Why ,because we are not living so much though our heart [Spirit] But we can always ask the LORD to confirm it.

We get used to hearing Him and then it becomes much better to know it HIM.

That why we Need to talk lots to Him and get used to hearing Him Lots.

That the Most Important Relationship You can ever have. We need to work on it LOTS. He can talk with Him anytime .Just in our Minds or with our Mouth.
But satan too put thoughts in our minds. normally they are evil thoughts? But he is the great deceiver.

I have found when we start praising the LORD JESUS ,he gets lost. Then we can hear the LORD plainly. I would say? When in doubt ? Just start praising the LORD and thanking Him for loving and helping You and then talk and listen. He NOT going to tell you anything that defiles your body or is hurting others .

The Holy Spirit does put thoughts in our mind, but they come from our spirit. The devil puts thoughts in our mind, but they often come from our sinful and fallen flesh. The world puts thoughts in our mind, from external sources, eg TV, other people, things we read etc. And thoughts can also come from ourselves, from our own memories, imaginations, dreams etc.

Thoughts from the Spirit they are something like thoughts but often much stronger, and the Spirit will often repeat Himself. That is, it won't be a passing thought that lasts only a second or two, but something that stays with you, and even repeats itself a number of times, sometimes with a sense of urgency, as happens when He gives driving directions when driving a car.

Sometimes the Spirit speaking is like thoughts that are not your own. As if someone is standing next to you and speaking to you. But it is coming from within you into your mind/ears, not audible from outside.

Sometimes the Holy Spirit talking seems like your own thoughts, if your mind and His mind are one, then your thoughts are also His thoughts, they are indistinguishable. But you get to this stage of unity after a long process of self denial and consecration.

No matter which way the Spirit speaks, it should be accompanied by some inner feeling of His presence, peace, light, contentment.
Once when I was looking for a church, I sensed light around one building, so I went there. Or sometimes you can sense darkness, that means don't go, or go if you want to but make sure you pray and cover yourself with prayer.

That really a good subject. Does He speak to us in our spirits mind or our flesh mind or both?
We see in scriptures He spoken to lots in the flesh mind and in dreams which our spirits mind does not have .
And I think we all know the battle is always in our flesh mind. where satan puts dumb thoughts in and we live pretty much our lives here to some degree for sure.

But to be honest i cannot fully argue it ?
But I am sure the called who have Not be Born of God as yet? Hear him in there flesh minds .

Of course No one was Born again or had Salvation or the New birth until our LORD died on the Cross and rose again to Heaven [New Jerusalem]

1Co_15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

Bless you James and your household in the mighty name of OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.

I am unfamiliar with the terms "spirit mind" and "flesh mind", as I consider we only have one mind, and its condition depends upon whether we set it on the spirit or the flesh. Perhaps this is what you mean?

I would agree that unbelievers can also hear God in their mind, even Cain the murderer, who conversed with God. But did God speak to Cain in the mind? Perhaps, He spoke to Cain audibly through the ears.

Mankind in general were created with the ability to hear God, and lost this somewhat during the fall, due to the soul or flesh becoming the leading part of man, rather than the spirit.

For believers, we hear Him in the spirit, otherwise perhaps He may speak to us in our flesh mind, perhaps if we are not setting our mind on the spirit.

For unbelievers, I think God can only speak into their mind or ears, as they have no spirit, or their spirit is dead.

Our Spirit man is the real person we are. It has a mind.

Rom_8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit

God judges us by what kind of mind our spirit has ?

That where the mind type of Christ is.
1Co_2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

1Co_14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
It has to have a real mind in order to pray or suffer in hell or talk to GOD.

Of course only those Born of God perfect seed has the same type mind as our Lord Jesus.
We are All a spirit being first. It our eternal part.

2Co_5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
The New creature only needs it body. It has everything else needed .

God a spirit and has a mind and we are a spirit and have a mind . The flesh mind is different than our New Man s mind.

The spirits mind is perfect and in perfect unity with our Lord Jesus.
The flesh mind is full of junk , some good some bad? No flesh mind is perfect.

He speaks in many ways I think. But they aren't always easily explained.

I've never heard an audible voice, but sometimes just a still small voice in my heart.
John 10:3; "To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
John 10:4; "When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
John 10:5; "A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers."
John 10:27; "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;

Just because the Holy Spirit speaks to us, doesn't mean people always listen. We have the ability to ignore the Holy Spirit's prompting.
Heb 3:7; Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE,
Heb 3:8; DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME, AS IN THE DAY OF TRIAL IN THE WILDERNESS,
Eph 4:30; Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
1 Thes 5:19; Do not quench the Spirit;
Acts 7:51; "You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.

Sometimes, it is just more of an urging, than actually words, it isn't really a feeling, because sometimes I have felt I wanted to do something, but I was urged not to do it.
Acts 11:12; "The Spirit told me to go with them without misgivings. These six brethren also went with me and we entered the man's house.
Acts 13:2; While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
Acts 21:11; And coming to us, he took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, "This is what the Holy Spirit says: 'In this way the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.'"
Acts 28:25; And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, "The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers,
Acts 28:26; saying, 'GO TO THIS PEOPLE AND SAY, "YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; AND YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE;
1 Tim 4:1; But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,

I don't know if we hear or understand everything the Spirit says. Sometimes he speaks on our behalf and we may not even comprehend it.
Rom 8:26; In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

1 Cor 3:16; Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

No one can truly believe Jesus is Lord without the Holy Spirit.
1 Cor 12:3; Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

Charismatic (Pentecostal) churches believe that there are people who receive revelation from God and he speaks to us through them.
1 Cor 12:4; Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit
1 Cor 12:10; and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Cor 12:28; And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.

One tme I was riding a motorcycle, and I was about to go through a busy intersection, for some unknown reason, I felt this strong urging to go another way. I didn't want to go the other way because I was headed toward a specific destination.
A few seconds later there was a big accident in the intersection. As I said earlier, it isn't really a feeling. Just a strong urging.
Acts 16:6; They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;
Acts 16:7; and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;

As others have mentioned before, he will bring scripture into your remembrance. Sometimes when you are reading scripture, he will open your eyes and heart and give you divine revelation about a specific Bible passage.
John 14:26; "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

Usually the Holy Spirit speaks about Jesus, not about wordly things.
John 15:26; "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

I don't think we can come to the full knowledge of God or the Bible without the Holy Spirit.
John 16:13; "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

Sometimes, in certain circumstances, the Holy Spirit speaks through us.
Luke 12:11; "When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say;
Luke 12:12; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say."

Now, having said all of that... sometimes we need to test the spirit.
1 Jn 4:1; Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 Jn 4:2; By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;
1 Jn 4:3; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.

Some churches preach that Jesus wasn't resurrected in the flesh. That he only was resurrected as a Spirit. The verses above say this is the anti-christ.

To me the verses below say two things. Men have the ability to harden their hearts to specific sins to the point that their conscience can become "seared over" and they no longer see what they are doing as sin.
The second thing that means to me is that the Holy Spirit sometimes speaks to us through our conscience.
1 Tim 4:1; But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
1 Tim 4:2; by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,

This is sinply doing something we know in our hearts is wrong. Or, not doing something we know is right.
Jas 4:17; Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

please help!

The one sure 100% way you can be totally positive, with no doubt what so ever is................... By reading the WORD of God (the BIBLE) start with 1 John, then perhaps Saint John.
