Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path. Romans 9:32 NLT
"Just because we've seen something many times doesn't mean we remember it or even notice it," Says Alan Castel, professor of psychology at UCLA and lead author of a study on "inattentional blindness and amnesia." To illustrate his point, Castel adds: "Does it say 'In God We Trust' on the front of the dollar or the back? Do you know what else it says? You've seen it so many times, but you probably haven't paid much attention to it."
In a 2012 study, Castel found only 24 percent of study participants could remember the existence and location of a bright-red fire extinguisher in the hallway they walked down daily. It's okay to flunk a study question but not okay to flunk a question in a real-life emergency.
Much worse is lacking humility. When you think you can handle most of life on your own, you'll do whatever you want, when you want, oblivious to God's power and presence every step along the way.
So humble yourself before God. Get on your knees. Pray. Read God's Word. Surrender every fiber of your being to God.
Prayer: Lord, I'm shocked to think how often I miss You right in front of me. I repent.
