Hosea 11: 1, Matthew 2: 13-15 and the Translation of Israel
“When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt” Hosea 11:1
"Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance." Isaiah 19: 24
There is a connection between Old Covenant Israel, as the chosen of God, who were rescued by God out of Egypt, and the sheltering of Christ as a child in Egypt when his life was threatened by King Herod.
"And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15. And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son." Matthew 2: 13-15
The Pharisees of Christ's time probably would have argued against the way Matthew applied Hosea's prophecy to Christ in Hosea 11: 1. The more literal way the Pharisees saw scripture and their inability to understand that Jesus Christ was their Messiah would have led them to reject the application of Hosea 11: 1 to calling the young Christ out of Egypt in Matthew 1: 13-15.
And in their literal method of Bible interpretation and rejection of Christ as the Messiah the Pharisees would have objected even more strongly to the scriptures on the remaking of Old Covenant Israel. For the Pharisees, God could not have promised to remake Old Covenant Israel. That remaking could put the Pharisees out of the religious business.
“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah. ” Jeremiah 31:31
"And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 5. Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 6. O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel." Jeremiah 18: 4-6
"Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21. Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? " Romans 9: 20-21
"The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts." Haggai 2: 9
"We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you............Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:" Colossians 1: 3, 13-14
This translation of us into a Spiritually new creature with Christ in us, the hope of glory (Colossians 1: 27), only happens in those who recognize their flesh is worthless, and cannot inherit the kingdom of God (I Corinthians 15: 50).
Old Covenant Israel was transformed or translated into that spiritual house seen in I Peter 2: 5, and the chosen generation, holy priesthood and holy nation or holy people of I Peter 2: 9. Anyone who enters into that spiritual house must be born again in Christ by the Holy Spirit (John 3: 1-7). And in that translation of Old Covenant Israel, the Israel which is a spiritual house of those born again is still Israel, God's inheritance (Isaiah 19: 24).
Christ, the son of God, was called out of Egypt and made a light within that Israel born again in him. Israel translated into the spiritual house of I Peter 2: 5,with Christ in it, was a light to the peoples. But - "And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived."
"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God." II Thessalonians 2: 2-4
"Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?
19. It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
20. And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
21. It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened." Luke 13: 18-21
"Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
7. Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:" I Corinthians 5: 6-7
