A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." ... Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. John 4:7, 9 NKJV
On this Mother’s Day, many men will enjoy the physical presence of their moms. Some will have to content themselves with a phone call. Many guys possess only memories of their mothers, while others grieve some emotional rupture that hinders their current relationship.
Days like this can be complicated, but Jesus provides an example that any man—whatever his status with Mom—can follow.
On His way through Samaria, “enemy territory” in the view of His fellow Jews, Jesus stopped to rest at a well in Sychar. It was noon, the heat of the day. When a disreputable Samaritan woman, likely choosing this time to avoid other people, came to draw water, Jesus spoke. Shocked at His attention, she soon found herself captivated by His wisdom and love. “Could this be the Messiah?” she asked her neighbors (John 4:29).
Jesus treated women with complete respect. He welcomed them into His circle of disciples and showed special compassion to foreign women, the sick, and widows. We should too.
Let’s honor our own mothers by treating every woman with respect.
Prayer: Lord God, help me to honor every woman You bring into my life.
