And some of them said, "Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?" John 11:37 NKJV
Jesus enjoyed a special friendship with three siblings in the town of Bethany, near Jerusalem. The Lord “loved” Martha, Mary, and Lazarus (John 11:5). When Lazarus became seriously ill, the sisters quickly called on Jesus—who waited two full days before leaving His place “across the Jordan” (John 10:40). His delay and the journey meant He didn’t reach Bethany until Lazarus had been four days in a tomb.
When He arrived, Jesus found “many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother” (John 11:19). The Lord spoke personally with both sisters then wept publicly upon approaching the grave (John 11:35). And some of the people who’d come to support the women began wondering: “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” (John 11:37).
Unlike the troublemaking queries Jewish leaders often posed to Jesus, this was an honest question. And the Lord’s miraculous raising of Lazarus answered it. John 11:45 says many came to believe in Jesus.
God can handle our honest questions—He’s heard them from psalmists, prophets, and plenty of other people through time. You can feel free to ask Him anything. Just be ready to accept and believe in whatever answer He sends.
Prayer: Lord, I have questions. Please help me to accept Your perfect answers.
