But for those who are righteous, the way is not steep and rough. You are a God who does what is right, and you smooth out the path ahead of them. Isaiah 26:7 NLT

When the asphalt is smooth, a car’s undercarriage clears the pavement, the shocks have less work to do, and the road trip of life seems more satisfying.

While Isaiah explained that the “righteous” drive on the best roads, Paul reminds every motorist about the maintenance that makes the race enjoyable: “Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God” (2 Corinthians 7:1).

In a culture where the Christian experience is sometimes reduced to platitudes and personalized license plates, it’s tempting to redefine evil so we can drive down any road we believe will make us happy. But Paul makes his meaning clear when he adds, “Let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.”

Most men know complete holiness means driving down only the roads that honor God and heading the opposite direction when temptation shows up. Complete holiness requires total rerouting and total restoration.

On the road to righteousness, you’re never strapped into an underpowered vehicle. The psalmist said that God “has made his people strong, honoring his faithful ones” (Psalm 148:14).

Prayer: Father, help me to do the holy maintenance that will help me follow Your road to righteousness.
