That night the LORD said, "Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you victory over them! But if you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah. Judges 7:9-10 NLT

Even though the Lord promised to give the enemy into Gideon’s hands, He added the statement quoted above.

God knew Gideon’s fears, so He provided a helper. Much like the earlier story of the fleece where God allowed Gideon to test Him twice, here God takes into account Gideon’s character, especially his anxiety. Inspirational leaders minister to the weaknesses of the people they serve.

The same shows up in the story of the young ruler. Jesus told him to sell his possessions. He did so knowing this ruler’s security was in his wealth, so He responded to the man’s real need. Perceptive leaders minister to the real needs of the people they serve.

The psalmist Asaph prayed: “how long will the enemy mock you, God? Will the foe revile your name forever? Why do you hold back your…right hand?” (Psalm 74:10-11 NIV). In response, God demonstrates that heroic leaders sacrifice their right to be respected in order to allow people to express their emotions appropriately.

Whether you’re leading a family or a Fortune 500 company, you need inspirational, perceptive, and heroic leadership skills.

Prayer: Lord, help me minister to the weaknesses of the people I serve, to understand their real needs, and to allow them to express their emotions appropriately.
