There is a song we sing at my church sometimes, I'm sure many of you have heard it.
Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that you're my God.
You know, the Bible says we will all bow down one day. (Rom 14:11; Php 2:10; ) and whether we like it or not, we WILL confess he is Lord.
Every Christian, every Muslim, every Atheist, all of us.
So we have a choice, we can acknowledge him as our Lord and God now, or we can acknowledge hm on that day.
But that day will be too late to choose him as your Lord and Savior.
There are two themes I see over and over again in the Bible. They are seemingly at odds with each other. But I don't think they are.
The first theme is freedom. Freedom can be a good thing.
John 8:32; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:36; If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Before we were saved, we didn't have a choice. We weren't free. We were slaves.
Rom 6:6; knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
But the second theme is the will of God.
In the Lords prayer, Jesus told us when we pray, to say this...
Matt 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven
Matt 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Matt 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
1 Thes 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;
1 Pet 2:15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.
1 Pet 4:2 so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
Jesus knew about the will of God, he put it before his own freedom.
Gal 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
Luke 22:42 saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done."
This second theme, we see much more often than the first one. It talks about denying ourselves and following God.
Matt 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. (Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23; )
Could it be that in our quest to be free, we forgot what it is to submit to the Lord ? We forgot how to bow down and worship him?
When someone is your Lord, do you do what YOU want to do, or do you do what THEY want you to do?
Have we forgotten to be vessels of clay to do the masters bidding? Have we forgotten we were created for his works?
Have we gotten so caught in what we want to do, that we forget to do what he wants us to do?
Are we constantly trying to bend him to our will, or are we yielding ourselves to his will?
A spirit that refuses to be broken is of no use to God.
Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling.
On the other hand....
Psa 51:12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.
Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
Prov 16:19 It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly Than to divide the spoil with the proud.
So even though we say he is our God, do we truly bow down and seek his will? Or are we determined to do our will?
He bought us, he paid for us. ( 1 Cor 6:20; 1 Cor 7:23; ) and in fact he paid more for some of us, than for others.
He was beaten, whipped, scourged, abused, nailed, pierced with a spear, ridiculed, struck, had thorns pressed into his head, for you...
Because he was more interested in the Fathers will than his own.
Luke 7:40 And Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he replied, "Say it, Teacher."
Luke 7:41 "A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
Luke 7:42 "When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?"
Luke 7:43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have judged correctly."
Can we love him enough to do what he asks of us? Can we deny ourselves sometimes?
That song I mentioned earlier has another line in it, that goes like this...
and I'll never know how much it cost, to see my sin upon that cross
maybe we could take up our cross today and deny ourselves to do his will for a change?
