Help me, O Lord my God; O save me according to Your mercy and loving-kindness!—That they may know that this is Your hand, that You, Lord, have done it. Psalm 109:26-27 AMPC

Like son, like father. King Solomon was seeking God’s restorative care on behalf of a sinning public in yesterday’s reading. His father, King David, prayed a different prayer in Psalm 109—and it was incredibly personal.

David knew enough about God to recognize that He wanted people to know Him. The king was asking for protection because God is merciful (exactly what Solomon brought up in his appeal for the people). David wanted enemies of his country to recognize—to think about—God. He didn’t want those advancing against him to have any doubt that they were encountering the one and only God. David wanted them to believe any other deity was a non-God. He knew that those who opposed Him had never encountered anything like God.

It is true that David wanted his enemy defeated, but he wanted that defeat to come from the God who could make Himself known in the middle of justice.

Prayer: Father, You’re never limited in how You make Yourself known to people. You can be found in good times and bad, when I’m happy or disappointed, and among the healed and wounded. I want people to recognize You. Make Yourself known wherever people are found.
