I've read The Jefferson Bible (The life and morals of Jesus of Nazareth). I found the Jefferson Bible while studying American history and Thomas Jefferson, and it feels more accessible to me then other religious texts and bibles because it's straight to the point. It's simply the plain facts about Jesus, his life and his words.

The Jefferson Bible is kind of obscure. Jefferson himself was very concerned that people might misunderstand why his intentions, so officially he said it was a gift for the Native Americans. The original is in 4 different languages, English, Greek, Latin & French. Since he didn't have a computer (I'm sure he would've loved them) he purchased two copies of each bible and carefully cut out historical facts relating to and words ascribed to Jesus and pasted these clippings in 4 neat rows in a blank book. Jefferson left out miracles, the virgin birth and the resurrection. I understand that might rub some people the wrong way, but on the other hand, those omissions make Jesus and his words more accessible to folk who struggle with accepting the more, dare I say, fantastic, parts of the bible and Jesus' story.

The Jefferson Bible is in the public domain and it's archived by Google books, some light searching should turn it up.
