WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT HELL?

HELL IS A REALITY

An earmark of cultic religions is their views about hell. If they do not use the fear of going to hell to bring people into bondage, then they try to discount hell altogether. One of Satan's favorite lies is to try to convince people that they suffer their hell on earth and that there is none hereafter. He also tries to get them to believe the lie that death only brings a state of sleep or rest. Another doctrine teaches that hell is only temporary and eventually after being in the fires of hell people become cleansed and purified to the degree that they will then be accepted into heaven. These terrible heresies are believed by many Christians who are ignorant of what God's Word has to say about it. Cults also teach that hell is a place where souls are simply annihilated and therefore no longer exist. Some teach reincarnation, giving people another chance to be born on this earth for as many times as it takes to become purified, progressing to higher forms each time they return. Others say hell is only a place away from God, but it is not a literal burning fiery hell. All of these are lies of Satan to cause people to minimize the reality of hell.

What does the Bible say about hell? To make a point, Jesus described this place as such a place of horror that it would be better to sever a member of our body that would lead us there, than to end up in that place of torments.

"And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched'' ( Mark 9:43-48 ).

We don't have to cut our limbs or pluck out our eyes to be free from hell, Jesus made a way for us to escape this evil through our repentance and acceptance of what He did for us on the cross when He died for the sins of our flesh. However, we see clearly that His statement signifies the exclusion of the hope of restoration and that punishment is eternal once a person is there. He repeats the words, "where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched," three times for emphasis.

Another account of the torments of hell is found in Luke 16:19-26:
"There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence." Hell is described not only as a fiery place of torment, but also as a separation from God and His saints, a place where there is continual torment."

HELL WAS MADE FOR SATAN

This place was prepared for the devil and his fallen angels. It was never meant for man to go there. Man is going there by choosing to follow Satan and his evil ways by rejecting the free grace Jesus is offering to mankind. "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:" (Matthew 25:41).

The Greek word for hell in the New Testament, "hades" means the same as "Sheol" in the Old Testament Hebrew. It is also spoken of as the grave, the pit, and the place of the dead. It is described as below the surface of the earth (Numbers 16:30, Psalm 55:15), beneath the depths of the sea, and is also spoken of as "the deep." It has gates and bars that hold its prisoners. The wicked go down into the region of hell where they are kept in torment until the day of the White Throne Judgment. Hell is a place of shame, remorse, consciousness, memory, and anguish.

PARADISE

There was also a region surrounded by "hell" known as "paradise" where the righteous dead went prior to Calvary. It was separated by a great impassable gulf from the lower regions. It was a place of peace and comfort and was the place referred to as "Abraham's Bosom." Not only was Abraham there, but all the Old Testament saints were kept there until Christ's crucifixion. Christ then descended into hell (Sheol, hades) (Psalm 16:10) (Luke 23:43) and at His ascension He led "captivity captive" and delivered the prisoners of hope from paradise and led them to heaven. Ephesians 4:8-10 says, "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)"

One note here: Jesus did not take the punishment for our sins in hell. He took our punishment for sin on the cross as a type of a sacrificial lamb. He bore our iniquities on the cross. In 2 Corinthians 5:21 the Bible says, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." When it says "He was made to be sin," it means He was made to be a "sin offering." He bore the sins of many on the cross. He did not bear our sins in hell. He went to hell (Sheol, the abode of the dead) to take the keys of death and hell away from the devil and to set the captives free and take them from paradise to heaven. All those who had died in faith, prior to the cross were kept in paradise which was a temporary place of rest and blessing until Christ paid the price for His own to enter heaven permanently. Although the location of paradise was in Sheol (the abode of the dead), it was not a place of torment. It was a special protected place until the day the Lord would free those in that place of captivity.

The Bible speaks that Jesus went to hell for three days and three nights after His death on the cross. Matthew 12:40 records this statement, "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." He was not in hell (Sheol) to receive torment but rather to preach to those that were there awaiting their release to be taken to heaven with Him. After those three days and three nights in hell (Sheol) Jesus took all the Old Testament saints with him to heaven (including one of the thieves that was crucified next to Him. Luke 23:43: "And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise." This explains why Jesus said He would be in hell for three days and three nights and yet would that day also be in paradise. Paradise was that safe place in hell (Sheol) that all the Old Testament saints were kept until their sins were atoned for on the cross.

Jesus is now seated on the right hand of God in a position of all authority and power over all things. He is awaiting the time of His second coming to this earth to get the rest of His people and take them to heaven also. For Christians, this will be a joyous time. His second coming for the evil and wicked however, will not be a joyous event as they will be judged and then sent to hell.

1 Peter 3:18-22: "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him."

The gates of hell (sheol and hades) do not prevail against the church today as they once did against the righteous in the Old Testament ( Matthew 16:18 ). All true believers go directly to heaven at death and do not wait in paradise as the Old Testament saints did. II Corinthians 5:6-8: "Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."

LAKE OF FIRE

Christ has the keys to death and hell which will ultimately have to give up its wicked dead for judgment. "Sheol" and "Hades" (the present hell) will then come to an end and "Gehenna" (the "Lake of Fire") will take its place.

Revelation 20:1-3: "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season."

Souls will burn forever there with no escape; this is the second death. The only escape from this fate is accepting Jesus as our Savior. He is the only one that has the keys of hell so we can be released from our prison of hell and condemnation.

"I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death" ( Revelation 1:18 ).

"And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, From whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire"(Revelation 20:10-15).

Hell and hellfire are realities according to God's Word and any that speak otherwise are in error and are promoting false doctrine. The only way to escape this dreaded place is becoming a child of God so we can go to heaven. It is man's sin that is leading him to hell. If we repent of our sin and ask Jesus to come into our heart we not only can be saved from the hell to come but also delivered from the hell in this earth

I appreciate your views of Hell but I would have to respectfully disagree with what you have written. As we would both agree we must let the Scriptures speak for themselves, "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is not light in them." (Is 8:20) and we can do this by comparing Scripture with Scripture, "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little." (Is 28:10).

As we look into the question of Hell, we will need to understand biblically the nature of man, what happens at death, etc. This is what I think is getting alot of people confused, dare I say deceived by the devil; not to mention painting a most hideous picture of a loving and merciful God. Through reading alot of people's posts on these forums I've noticed alot of the same general opinions held but no complete picture from the Scriptures to back them up.

He also tries to get them to believe the lie that death only brings a state of sleep or rest.
For this we need to understand what the Scriptures say about what happens to man at death.

In the garden of Eden God said to man "...but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Gen 2:17) (emphasis added).
Now I'm sorry to those who don't like to read outside of the English language but certain things can only be understood by going to the original languages. We don't have to be Greek or Hebrew scholars when a concordance will do. The literal rendition of the word "die" in Gen 2:17 is "dying thou shalt die", which is noted in the margin of most Bibles. So as is evident in the rest of this account, they died spiritually that very moment (there close union with God was cut off), and they began to die physically until, "thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return" (Gen 3:19). But what did the Devil say to Eve about this warning issued by God which has been propagated for millenia by the majority of Christendom (I'm not saying deliberately or maliciously either), "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die." (Gen 3:4) (emphasis added).

So now do we believe God, that we will die; or the Devil, that we will not die? I choose, "But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD" (Josh 24:15).

Nowhere is Scripture do we find verses to support the lie of the devil that man lives on in some higher state, or in a place of torment after he has died in this life. If that were so that would prove that Satan was in fact correct, that "Ye shall not surely die" and God is proved a liar. But "God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar" (Rom 3:4). In the Scriptures only God has the attribute of being immortal, while man is mortal. Only God has life in Himself, totally underived and unborrowed. "Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen." (1 Tim 6:15, 16); "For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself." (Jn 5:26). Compare this to mankind: "What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah." (Ps 89:48); "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. (1 Cor 15:52-54); "Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?" (Job 4:7); "Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof." (Rom 6:12).

So as is evident, man is not immortal. Even in the time of the great Protestant Reformation Martin Luther classed the immortality of the soul as one of those false doctrines that Rome borrowed from paganism and incorporated into the religion of Christendom and classed it with the "monstrous fables that form part of the Roman dunghill of decretals." - E. Petavel, The Problem of Immortality, page 255. So then in the context of Hell, what happens when we die? God has said "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Rom 6:23). Do we go straight to a place of punishment for our sin and burn for eternity, or do we go straight into God's presence (upon accepting Jesus that is) and reign with Him? Or is there something else? As we both know death came because of sin originally in the Garden of Eden, "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." (Rom 5:12). So death is the opposite of life, God "giveth to all life, and breath, and all things" (Acts 17:25). Man becomes living soul with God's breath of life, "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Gen 2:7) (emphasis added). So when God's breath enters into dry bones, they live, "Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live." (Eze 37:5). What is death? The absence of God's breath: "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish." Ps 146:4. God has our breath in His hand, "The God is whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways." (Dan 5:23); "In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind." (Job 12:10). So when Abraham "gave up the ghost" he died (Gen 25:8).

So what are the conditions of being dead? Jesus Himself said that when man dies, it is like sleep:

Jn 11:1-44: "Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus...Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleeps, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead...Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go." (What better authority than the Creator Himself about what happens when you die. You sleep in the grave. I'm sure we all know what happens when you sleep...Notice that here is a man who "hath been dead four days" (Jn 11:39) and notice that the Biblical record is completely silent about his experience during this time. He didn't go to Heaven or Hell (the place commonly referred to) but was sleeping as Jesus put it).

Ecc 9:5, 6, 10: For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun...Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Job 14:12, 21: "So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep...His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them."

Is 38:18, 19: For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day.

Ps 146:4: His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

1 Thess 4:13-15: "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep." (emphasis added).

Matt 27:52: "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose."

Dan 12:2 (pointing down the age to the great day when the dead in Christ would rise): "And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."; as well as "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." (Jn 5:28, 29).

Is 26:19: "Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead."

I think these verses, although not complete are sufficient to show what happens at death to the just and the unjust, that we sleep awaiting as Jesus said the resurrection of life and the resurrection of damnation. There are no verses to back up any theory that the dead are actually doing anything at all. Needless to say these fly in the face of what Jesus has said about sleep, which I'm sure we all know what that is like...nothing. Hours pass by and we know it not. Does the world exclusive of us stop? No it goes on without us, and so it is with death.

Now the whole confusion with the doctrine of hell arises when people get the description of Hell confused with the description of the Lake of Fire, (Rev 20:14).

(Borrowed Source, will give website is desired, excellent resource). The word “hell” is used 54 times in the Bible. It is translated from several different words with various meanings, as indicated below:

In the Old Testament:
31 times from the Hebrew “Sheol,” which means
“the grave”
In the New Testament:
10 times from the Greek “Hades,” which means
“the grave”
12 times from the Greek “Gehenna,” which means
“a place of burning”
1 time from the Greek “Tartarus,” which means
“a place of darkness”.

I will finish this reply after I get back from my holiday (a week or so). So it is by no means complete as I haven't even got to the lake of fire yet. But I think you have misunderstood this essential topic even to the point of apply the parable of the rich man and lazarus as true life. There are so many reasons to show that it is a parable. If you believe that it isn't then we are forced to believe that trees talk.

"The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us. But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us. But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees? Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us. And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us. And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon." (Judges 9:8-15).

I would love to give you the links for the truth about death and hell is you like? Your brother is Christ, Paul.

Nobody is left sleeping after the great day of judgement. And hell is eternal suffering.

<DIR>Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.Rev 14:9And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, </DIR><DIR>Rev 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:</DIR><DIR>Rev 14:11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
As usual Jesus described it best:

</DIR>Mat 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast himinto outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

One cannot weep or gnash ones teeth if one is not conscience.

John 3:18 (NKJV)

18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God

If will do not accept life, we are on the road to destruction. A lack of decision is in fact a decision, we are on our way to Hell until the choice is made to follow Jesus.

God warns us and gives us clear instructions on how to get off that road... Proverbs 14:12 Ezekial 3:17 Luke 13:3 John 3:36 Romans 10:9-10 2 Thess. 1:9.

There are no fence positions. Hell by default is a result of no choice.

Is Hell a literal burning place? Both the Old and New Testaments provide evidence that hell is a literal, burning place...

Psalm 37:20
Malachi 4:1
Matthew 13:42
Luke 16:24
John 15:6
Jude 7
Revelation 9:2
Revelation 14:10

Is hell eternal? (forever, everlasting, never ending, always, infinite)

Hebrews 9:14
Luke 18:18
Hebrews 5:9
1 Timothy 1:17
2 Corinthians 4:18
2 Corinthians 5:1
1 Peter 5:10
Mark 3:29
Hebrews 6:2
Jude 7
