I'm struggling with understanding what happens after we die. Judgment does take place until 1,000+ years after Christ comes back to Earth (Rev 20), so unless we can go to heaven without being judged then what happens to us from when we die until judgment?

We are found in Christ having His sinless righteousness and on that basis we may freely enter the Father's presence. Our sins were judged on the cross and in that great day our works will be judged but our salvation is indeed still found in what Jesus did and not our own works.
We go to with with God when we die:
2Co 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
