Hear The Word of The Lord

Jeremiah 7:1-11 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2“Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim this message: Hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah who enter through these gates to worship the LORD. 3Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Correct your ways and deeds, and I will let you live in this place. 4Do not trust in deceptive words, saying: ‘This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’

5For if you really correct your ways and deeds, if you act justly toward one another, 6if you no longer oppress the foreigner and the fatherless and the widow, and if you no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow other gods to your own harm, 7then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

8But look, you keep trusting in deceptive words to no avail. 9Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known, 10and then come and stand before Me in this house, which bears My Name, and say, ‘We are delivered, so we can continue with all these abominations’? 11Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Yes, I too have seen it, declares the LORD.”

The Church

This could so easily have been written about and to “the church” in the USA and perhaps throughout the world and in other nations today. And the Lord is speaking to those who are His messengers, and He is instructing us to proclaim His message to those who profess the name of Jesus and who profess to give their worship to God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit. We are to speak to the church the words of the Lord at a time when so many are teaching them lies, and who are distorting God’s words.

But the church is not a building called “church.” And it is not a church denomination. And it is not these businesses of human origin partnered with the world and with the ungodly and with the government. The church is the collective body of Christ comprised of all people who are of genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ throughout the world. We are those who by faith in Jesus Christ have died with Him to sin and who are now walking in obedience to His commands, although many right now are wandering.

God’s Message

God’s message to so much of the church today is the same as it was to His people back then. He is telling His church collectively, although not necessarily applying to every individual, to correct their ways and their deeds which need correcting. We, as His body, are to not put our trust in deceptive words. We are not to believe the lies of the enemy which are permeating so much of what is called “church” today. We are not to believe that we can continue to make sin our practice and that God will approve.

We are to act justly and not hypocritically toward one another. We are to oppress (persecute, torment) no one. We are not to murder anyone, and that includes we are not to murder the unborn via abortion. We are not to be idolaters who follow after the “gods” of this world. We are not to believe the liars at face value, but we are to test the spirits to see if they be of God. And there are so many “pastors” who are lying to their congregations and who are teaching them a false gospel of grace which pacifies them in their sins.

False Professions of Faith

So many who profess faith in Jesus Christ are continuing in deliberate and habitual sin against God, convinced that because they made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ that now all their sins are forgiven, and they are on their way to heaven. So they steal, hate, abuse, misuse, murder, and/or commit adultery, and they are the sexually immoral, wicked, deceivers, idolaters, unfaithful, disobedient, and/or those who take advantage of others. But they who do so are following after a lie of Satan who desires for them to sin.

And then they stand before God and they profess that they believe in Jesus Christ, that He is their Lord, and that they belong to Him. And they attend weekly gatherings of “the church,” and they sing songs of worship of God, and they listen to the preachers’ sermons, and they give their offerings, and they do their “good deeds.” But then they turn right around and they lie and cheat and commit adultery, and they are sexually immoral while they remain convinced that heaven is their eternal destiny and that they are Christians.

False Teachings

A big part of why so much of “the church” is in the spiritual condition that it is in is because so many are believing the lies being taught by the “wolves in sheep’s clothing” who serve as “pastors” of so many of these gatherings of “the church.” I hear it often from responders who tell me that they “prayed the prayer to receive Christ” and now all their sins are forgiven, and they are on their way to heaven, and so they can now continue in sin guilt-free. For they are convinced that repentance and obedience to God are not required.

The Truth

But Jesus Christ taught that to come to Him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) Him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to His commands, in His power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls Him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

For by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in Him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness in walks of obedience to God’s commands. We are no longer to permit sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
