"Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the LORD God of Israel: "[There is] an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you." Joshua 7:13 NKJV
The people of Israel were banned from plundering the city of Jericho because the battle had been won by the Lord. They primarily benefited from God’s victory, and they were told to recognize the Lord as the victor rather than enjoying the plunder—as if they had won the battle on their own. After wandering in the wilderness, it surely was tempting to pick up a few small valuables from the ruins of Jericho. Yet if they hoped to live by faith in God’s protection and provision, then they had to live by faith in God, obeying His commands and relying on His deliverance.
Whatever you’re facing today, you have an opportunity to rely more perfectly on God’s provision and power. If your heart is consumed with looking for ways to provide for yourself, you’re going to miss the comfort and direction God wants to provide. Rather than looking through the ruins for what you can get for yourself, give thanks for God’s provision in your life, and look ahead to the ways He can carry you in the days ahead.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for protecting and providing for Your people. Help me to look to You alone for protection and provision.
