"I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman? Job 31:1 NKJV

God’s seventh commandment—“You shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14)—is an obvious prohibition against sexual activity with anyone who isn’t your spouse. But Jesus offered some tough teaching on the subject of adultery, namely, that it isn’t just about where we take our bodies, but (even more importantly) about the impure places our thoughts can so easily go (see Matthew 5:27-28).

So how do we keep lust-inducing images from entering through our eyes and into our minds? Job, a man who lived thousands of years before Jesus came to earth, offers some practical advice. Job seemed to understand that what a man allows his eyes to focus on can lead his heart and mind to places that dishonor God. The key, he concluded, was to be very, very careful about what we allow our eyes to focus upon.

That’s no easy task, especially in today’s world, where seemingly every other image that comes across our field of view has the potential to cause us problems. More than anything, though, it’s a matter of commitment…to your spouse, to your children, and to your Father in heaven.

Prayer: Father, help me to keep my heart pure from lust and my eyes away from those things that take my mind and heart to impure places.
