I have been un-churched for over a year and in that time I have become a Bible only Christian. I see it like this... scripture over doctrine because scripture is the Word of God and doctrine is the invention of man.

You are right in using the Bible as the primary tool. It is God's record for mankind of HIS perfect plan, for the reconcilliation of man to God.
I would not know Jesus without the Bible.

It also has to be said that without the Holy Spirit an understanding of what the Bible actually says is fraught with peril.

Doctrine is man's attempt to collect scriptural passages to support a theme. Say for example, the diety of Christ. This is a clear and undeniable doctrine of the New Testament. In this case the methodology of doctrine formation is correct.

Now holding to this methodology and keeping the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle in mind, there are some more doctrines that are rightly doctrines.

But, it may also be said that remaining meek (teachable) while reading the Bible is also invaluable.

So doctrines are necessary to guard against heresy. Further, try to keep the number of doctrines to a minimal level. This avoids strolling into theology. In theology, everthing becomes blurred, as each school exerts its influence. Man in this case cannot resist distorting the Word of God. Which church history is full to the brim of.

Yes you are on the right track. Others will no doubt know much more than I.

It is beneficial to gather with other believers from time to time but this can be done outside of religious liturgy. My wife and I stopped participating in religious liturgical meetings several years ago. I too, like to study the scriptures for myself and have found some religious doctrines to be errant.
