Good atheist argument by Ricky Gervais

I watched a short video of Ricky Gervais this weekend. He raised a very convincing argument for atheism.

Argument raised:

''You say there is a God and that your God is the true God. Ok, tell me why I must believe you. Can you show me something, anything that proves that?

If every religious text and every science book were burned, in a thousand years science would be rediscovered and written again in the same way, while religion would return in entirely different versions.''

-------------------

He was not rude or belittling. It sounded like he actually believes this. It was so refreshing to hear an atheist come across as though they are being genuinely honest and truthful about their actual beliefs.

-------------------

Argument answered:

Proof there is a God:

Intelligent design.

Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

To quote Isaac Newton. Widely considered the smartest scientist of all time. ''In the absence of all evidence to the contrary, the thumb alone will convince me of the existence of a God creator''.

Proof that God of the bible is the real God:

There is a difference between the gentiles and the Jews in the OT that needs to be considered.

For the OT Jews:

In the Old Testament, there were many prophets who performed truly miraculous acts, demonstrating that the God of the Jews was the one true God. They also had the Temple, which housed the Ark of the Covenant, and high priests who could pass beyond the veil and hear directly from God.

Jews who stopped believing in their God and worshipped a golden calf, received the death penalty as their sign.

For the Gentiles and the NT Jews:

God distanced Himself from mankind after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. This separation was by design and for a purpose that will be fully understood in heaven. It is closely tied to free will, a subject too vast to address in depth here.

However, we can still address the point raised directly, even though God has distanced Himself.

From day one, in both the OT and the NT God has always sought to reveal Himself to those after His heart. God has set 'a right heart' as the criteria to receive a revelation of Him or any kind of miracle.

We read in John 9:31 that God does not hear the prayers of sinners. We read in Luke 5:32 and Psalm 51:17 that God wants repentance of sin. If we repent of our sins and pass God's judgement of heart and mind Jer 17:9-12, Jesus comes into our hearts Rev 3:20 and we become new creations 2 Cor 5:17. We receive a real revelation from the Holy Spirit 1 Cor 12:3, are given saving faith Rom 12:3, on par with faith in gravity, to firmly without any wavering Rom 4:20-21, believe that Jesus is Lord and was raised from the dead Rom 10:9.

A more simple form: If you get on your knees and truthfully repent of your sins, God will pay you a visit and make you a Christian.

----------------

Conclusion:

God is as real as the gravity holding you to the ground.

Without Jesus there is no Christianity. Jesus has been part and parcel of mankind from day 1 of their creation and will be with us for all eternity.

Eph 1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
