Hey so random question, I was reading in 1 chronicles 13:10, in the passage the ark is being brought to jeruselam or the city of david. On the way everyone is singing and dancing celebrating the Lord then all of a sudden a guy drops dead! The oxen pulling the ark had stumbled and a guy name Uzza tried to help out and uphold the ark and God freaked out and killed him!!! This drives me crazy!!!! Everyone always talks about God being unchanging and merciful but as i read the old testament He is always ticked off at something, someone, or having a fit like he did with Uzza killing some poor guy who is trying to help out. Scares me because i wonder when God of mercy has a bad day and becomes bipolar and flips out on me. I know the law said that only certain people could transport the ark but really?? input needed, i seriously get so frustrated with some of the highly questionable things God pulls in the old testament. Dont get me wrong i love God and want to know that he is true to his word and faithful not all over the place like he seems in the OT.

Jesus instructs us in this verse that the writers of the old testament did not have had a clear understanding of the nature of God.Scripture says that there is no death at all in God.
Hebrews 2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
Hebrews 3:1 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
Moses saw God in a bush but this says that the law was given by angels and in Hebrews 2:2 we see that they are the enforcers of that law.
Sooo. was Moses mistaken?
These angels came in the authority of God so to Moses they were God,but they may not always act like God.

1. Let the sin of Uzza warn us all to take heed of presumption, rashness, and irreverence, in dealing about holy things (v. 9), and not to think that a good intention will justify a bad action. 2. Let the punishment of Uzza convince us that the God with whom we have to do is a jealous God. His death, like that of Nadab and Abihu, proclaims aloud that God will be sanctified in those that come nigh unto him (Lev. 10:3 ), and that the nearer any are to him the more displeased he is with their presumptions. This wasn't just the God of the old Testament.
Acts 5:1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,
Acts 5:2 and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife's full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles' feet.
Acts 5:3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land?
Acts 5:4 "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."
Acts 5:5 And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it.
Acts 5:6 The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.
Acts 5:7 Now there elapsed an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
Acts 5:8 And Peter responded to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for such and such a price?" And she said, "Yes, that was the price."
Acts 5:9 Then Peter said to her, "Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well."
Acts 5:10 And immediately she fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
Acts 12:22 The people kept crying out, "The voice of a god and not of a man!"
Acts 12:23 And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.
God is love yes. But he is also Holy and just. Too many Christians are trying to drag him down to their standards instead of trying live more Godly lives. He will forgive us for our sins yes, but we shouldn't take that as a license to do whatever we want. The nature of God didn't change between the testaments, only the grace of the cross did. Remember grace is an "undeserved" gift. We all deserve death. (Rom 3:23; Rom 6:23)
A non-believer asked me once, how come your God is so weak he can't be in the presence of sin. Would the sin kill him?
I explained it to him like this, we are a small ice cube ( an inch or two across ) drifting toward the sun, which is billions of times bigger than us. The ice cube will never make it to the sun. It will be evaporated/disintegrated/annihilated etc... before it ever gets close to the sun. It isn't God who is weak, it's us. If we were ever in the presence of his Holiness (without the blood of Christ) in our sinful nature, we would surely be as annihilated as that ice cube.
The Ark of the covenant was how God met and spoke to Moses (Exod 25:22) I believe Uzza got a little too close to the sun (without the son).

The Old Testament was a type and shadow of Christ and the New was the revealing of Christ. God is (and always will be) Love but He is also Holy and no sin can stand in His presence. He has not changed.
That being said, to violate God's commands about handling the Ark was to go outside of the one prescribed way of entering His presence which was the equivalent of trying to enter the manifest presence of God without the blood of Christ. This was fatal then and is still fatal now as no man may touch God in his own works and righteousness and live.

GOD never loses self-control but it is the people who lose self-control.
GOD is Always in absolute control!
When The Lord Jesus Christ made a whip of cords and smashed over tables He did not lose self-control it was a very righteous act.
If God decides to do judgement on people it is always a righteous act.
How much i love GOD for He Alone is The Righteous Judge!

Read numbers 25
Numbers 25:
1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3 And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.

So Phinehas had great zeal for God Almighty and what did God say about Phinehas and what he did with the javelin that he did thrust through both their belly?
It is not what you would think....
Here it is:
10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
(emphasis mine added)Think about this... God actually rewarded Phinehas! It is something that is not often preached about in the churches. God likes us to be bold for Him and His righteousness and to make no compromise!

4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.
6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
So Phinehas had great zeal for God Almighty and what did God say about Phinehas and what he did with the javelin that he did thrust through both their belly?
It is not what you would think....
Here it is:
10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
(emphasis mine added)Think about this... God actually rewarded Phinehas! It is something that is not often preached about in the churches. God likes us to be bold for Him and His righteousness and to make no compromise!

Also the people had a choice:
Deu_30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
Life or death was is the palm of their hands and yet all to frequently they chose to abandon God and sought only to satisfy the lust of their own flesh. All this was done in spite of both multiple warnings and the loving draw of the Holy Spirit.
Isa 66:4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
Basically and sadly, they got just what they asked for.

It is not possible to know exactly what Uzzah's intentions were, but consider this: What if he wanted to be known as the great man who saved the Ark from being thrown onto the road. If this man was prideful and wanted to be prominent, that would be justification form God's point of view to strike him dead. After all God hates insincerity and a self serving nature.
It should also be noted, the ark was to be carried on poles on the shoulders of men when being transported, this was a violation of God's commandments, as Exodus 25:13-16, NASB: "You shall make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. You shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, to carry the ark with them. The poles shall remain in the rings of the ark; they shall not be removed from it. You shall put into the ark the testimony which I shall give you." If they were obedient to God's commandments and carried the ark properly, this accident would have never happened! Perhaps that is another reason why God's anger blazed against the man who touched the Ark.
