To the Chief Musician. Set to "Do Not Destroy." A Michtam of David. Do you indeed speak righteousness, you silent ones? Do you judge uprightly, you sons of men? No, in heart you work wickedness; You weigh out the violence of your hands in the earth. ...So that men will say, "Surely [there is] a reward for the righteous; Surely He is God who judges in the earth." Psalm 58:1-2,11 NKJV

How do you use your influence and power each day? It’s clear that some believe there will be no consequences for their choices, either shrugging their shoulders at injustice or working to advance their own ends regardless of the impact on others. The Psalms are full of laments that call on God to take notice of injustice and evil in the world. The psalmists watched far too many devise evil schemes and then work toward ill-gotten gains without apparent consequence.

Does God still notice the violence and injustice in the world? Is there any benefit to being righteous, following God’s commands and ensuring that all are treated with equity and justice?

The consequences may not come today, but the Psalms are a reminder that you will one day need to give an account of your actions. God will come to judge the earth, giving to each person according to what they had done. It may be tempting to live each day without a thought of tomorrow, but your choices for justice and holiness will one day be called to account before God.

Prayer: Lord, may I use my influence for justice and may I walk in holiness today.
