The stone [which] the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD's doing; It [is] marvelous in our eyes. Psalm 118:22-23 NKJV

Builders didn’t choose stones haphazardly. They made deliberate choices based on long-held standards and specifications for a structure. Each stone was chosen based on years of experience and knowledge, with multiple workers having a hand in the construction process. If a faulty stone undermined the integrity of the building, the builder’s reputation and future hopes of work would be ruined. Placing a rejected stone in the most important part of a building was a major risk indeed!

You may be surprised, then, to read the psalmist’s declaration that a solid, unshakable foundation is the one made with a rejected cornerstone. Yet God specializes in taking the things and people we overlook or count out and using them for noble and essential purposes. God is most likely working in the people and the places you are most likely to overlook and count out. Even more striking, the results of God’s work are marvelous and praiseworthy, revealing God’s wisdom and power to all.

It will take courage to reject conventional wisdom and pursue God’s influence in your life even as it draws you away from well-trod paths. Yet this is where you will find God’s power and presence.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see Your hand at work in the places I overlook.
