We are told over 50 times in the Bible to fear God. Here are a few examples.
Lev 25:17; 'So you shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God.
Deut 6:13 "You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name.
Deut 6:24 "So the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today.
Deut 8:6 "Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.
Deut 10:20; "You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name.
Deut 13:4; "You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.
1 Sam 12:14; "If you will fear the LORD and serve Him, and listen to His voice and not rebel against the command of the LORD, then both you and also the king who reigns over you will follow the LORD your God.
2 Kings 17:39; "But the LORD your God you shall fear; and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies."
Psa 111:10; The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever.
Prov 9:10; The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
All of those verses are in the old Testament, but what about the New Testament? Here are few examples.
Acts 13:16; Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:
Acts 13:26; "Brethren, sons of Abraham's family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.
Rom 3:18; "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES."
2 Cor 5:11; Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.
2 Cor 7:1; Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
1 Pet 2:17; Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
Rev 14:7; and he said with a loud voice, "Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters."
Now some say, to fear God isn't to "be afraid" of Him, but rather repect Him, or be in awe of Him. I agree, this is sometimes the case.
1 Chron 16:30; Tremble before Him, all the earth; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved.
Ezra 10:3; "So now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
Psa 4:4; Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
Psa 96:9; Worship the LORD in holy attire; Tremble before Him, all the earth.
Psa 99:1; The LORD reigns, let the peoples tremble; He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!
Psa 114:7; Tremble, O earth, before the Lord, Before the God of Jacob,
Acts 7:32; 'I AM THE GOD OF YOUR FATHERS, THE GOD OF ABRAHAM AND ISAAC AND JACOB.' Moses shook with fear and would not venture to look.
Heb 12:21; And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling."
Isa 6:5; Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."
Rev 1:17; When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,
Php 2:12; So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;
But many times fear, simply means fear. Being afraid. People trembled and shook before the Lord. Isaiah said he was ruined and undone before the Lord.
John fell at His feet like dead man in fear. Moses was full of fear and trembling and "shook" before the Lord.
People have lost the fear of God. Even Christians.
I have heard "Christians" say things like...
"Well, God did a lot of things right, but not everything. When I see Him I'm going to tell Him all the stuff He did wrong and how He could have done it better".
"Well I know God made me a biological man, but in my heart I know I am a woman. God was wrong. God made a mistake when He made me".
"God won't send anyone to hell. God is love, and love doesn't punish anyone. God is OK with whatever sins I am doing".
"God is tolerant, so you should be tolerant. God is OK with my homosexual lifestyle. He is OK with the abortions I had performed".
"God is not wicked, only a wicked person would send anyone to hell. If God does that, then He is wrong."
People want to be God. God is wrong. God made a mistake. God isn't going to do this or that.
Instead of trying not to sin. We want God to be OK with it. Instead of letting God change us into His image. Many are trying to change God into
their image. Because after all.... "sometimes God is just wrong".
"Well I don't think God would do ...." Unfortunately you are not God. Now I don't believe God is sitting up in heaven just watching us, waiting for us to make a mistake.
(Although it does say all of our deeds are recorded in heaven). I believe there is mercy and grace... for those who fear God.
Luke 1:50; "AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.
... but too many these days have no fear (or respect) for The LORD God.
Acts 9:31; So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase.
Rev 15:4; "Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy; For ALL THE NATIONS WILL COME AND WORSHIP BEFORE YOU, FOR YOUR RIGHTEOUS ACTS HAVE BEEN REVEALED."
