"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33
Appearances can be deceiving, and that was especially so during the final hours before the arrest, trial, and execution of Jesus. How could the disciples believe in a moment like this that He had overcome the world?
Jesus trusted the Father to remain with Him as He faced His greatest hour of trial. In the same way, Jesus promised to remain with His disciples during their own trials, giving them peace and hope that could overcome all appearances of being defeated.
Whether you're going through a difficult season or you anticipate one in the near future, consider that, regardless of circumstances, Jesus has overcome the world. That hardly guarantees smooth sailing, as His impending death made clear in this passage. Rather, there's nothing that can separate you from God. God remains with you, even in your lowest moments and deepest sorrows.
Much as the good shepherd didn't abandon his sheep in the darkest valley, God will not abandon you. On the other side of your sorrow is the hope that God will win one day.
Prayer: Lord, help me to take a step of faith into Your victory and peace today.
