Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You [are] with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Psalm 23:4-5 NKJV
The psalmist takes comfort in the Lord’s direction in his life, remembering that he is only a sheep being led by God. Yet guidance doesn’t guarantee quiet days by streams of water. In fact, there may be moments of loss and struggle, uncertainty and suffering. While God provides for His people, He also walks with them through the darkest valleys, providing what they need even while their enemies loom.
Going through the darkest valley may not sound like a great option to you, but there undoubtedly will be hard times ahead. Loss and suffering will come your way eventually, and the question isn’t how you can avoid such challenges but whether you are willing to depend on God to guide you through them. Are you waiting on God to set a table before you and care for your needs? Are you willing to hope in Him alone, even if His solution isn’t what you’re hoping it will be?
Prayer: Lord, I trust that You are my Shepherd who can guide me through the dark valleys of life.
