LORD, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? 4 But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you. Psalm 130:3-4
Many men find it very difficult to forgive themselves for past mistakes and moral failures—particularly if they’re living with the ongoing consequences of past actions. Daily reminded of their sins, they trudge on in condemnation and defeat, feeling that God has turned His back on them.
Though they experience His care and provision, they conclude that God is just putting up with them, barely tolerating them, but doesn’t really love them. They may believe that they’re saved, but often feel that they’ll barely squeak into heaven.
If this describes you, you need to read Psalm 103:8-13, particularly verse 12 which says, “He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” In Isaiah, He says, “I…will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again” (Isaiah 43:25). And in the New Testament, John tells us, “If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (1 John 1:9).
If you’ve confessed your sins to God and turned from them, He has forgiven you. Now you must trust in the depth and power of His forgiveness, forgive yourself, and rest daily in His love.
