Do not hold us guilty for the sins of our ancestors! Let your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair. Psalm 79:8
Everyone has the burdens of their failures and struggles, but these need not hold you back from God. Your failures don't cut you off from His compassion and mercy. In fact, when you have confessed your sins to the Lord, they're as good as forgotten. While God chooses to forget whether or not you're "worthy," it's far more difficult for you to forget how unworthy you may be. You may cling to your past, remembering how you've fallen short.
The good news is that your failures are where God's compassion goes. His mercy meets you where you're weakest and at your most imperfect. He doesn't leave you hanging, wondering if you've gone too far this time. His compassion is swift and direct.
Is God's compassion something that you have to seek, beg for, or envy others for as you see them receive it? Do you imagine yourself as particularly sinful or cut off from God's compassion? If you struggle with guilt and shame, it may be that you're holding on to your sins. The Psalms assure you that God gives you more mercy than you may think you deserve.
