You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths. Psalm 88:6 NLT
Today’s psalm is the only one written by Heman the Ezrahite, who 1 Chronicles describes as a multitalented Levite: a composer, musician, singer, worship leader, and prophet.
Sadly, many such gifted men suffer from discouragement, depression, and despair. On one such occasion, Heman started composing Psalm 88. Unlike every other psalm, however, it offers not even a hint of an uplifting note of hope, hallelujah, or inspiration. The composer is super down, and pretty soon you are too!
A. W. Tozer admitted, “It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply.” In other words, you need to expect and embrace discouragement, depression, and despair. They are three of God’s tools to chip away at the rough parts of your heart, the wrong thinking in your head, and the wayward tendencies of your hands and feet.
Like a world-class lapidary, the Lord wants to make you a million-dollar trophy of His loving-kindness, mercy, and grace—now and for eternity. Let Him!
Prayer: Thank You, unshakable God, that out of deep pain can come hope. Out of deep pain can come hope. Out of deep pain can come a much richer sense of Your providential love. Out of deep pain can come a bridge to one’s destiny. So please do Your good work in me.
