Then he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the LORD gave victory to David wherever he went. So David reigned over all Israel, and he administered justice and equity to all his people. 1 Chronicles 18:13-14 ESV

Justice and equity go hand in hand throughout the Old Testament accounts of Israel and Judah’s kings. Behind a king’s commitment to worship God alone in the temple, justice and equity often stand as the measures of a king’s domestic policy. Rather than evaluating a leader’s programs, buildings, or economy, God wants leaders who will ensure the just laws of the land are enforced fairly and who will treat everyone based on the same standard without playing favorites.

What would you consider a success for yourself when you have a position of influence or a leadership role? Perhaps a good starting point, one based on God’s standards for leaders, is whether you have been fair in your treatment of others and whether you have faithfully obeyed God’s commands. That isn’t necessarily a guarantee of continued success or acclaim, but if you hope to lead according to God’s standards, modeling yourself after the man said to have a heart modeled after God’s own is a good place to start!

Prayer: Lord, help me to use my influence to ser ve others with justice and equity in all situations.

I found the use of equity as interesting in the scripture. One definition of equity in Merriam's dictionary is:

: justice according to natural law or rights specifically : freedom from bias or favoritism
b: something that is equitable

I found that interesting... Natural laws according to the world's standards right now are becoming a bit mixed up. As Christians we need to stand for God's laws, whether it be in a leadership position or under leadership.

Good translation.... Many have it as justice and righteousness. What is right has to be measured by the Word. For leaders it encourages righteous laws. For others, if it doesn't go against Bible, it encourages following leadership.

The favorites is a good point too. I work at a preschool, and kids are all on different maturity levels/development levels. I don't play favorites, but I consider it a success in discerning the best way to teach them. What works for teaching one child doesn't work for another. Some need a bit firmer of a hand, while others, words can break them and have the opposite result. I am still in the learning process even with my three year old and ten month old.
