If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But [there is] forgiveness with You, That You may be feared. Psalm 130:3-4 NKJV
The psalmist made an honest assessment of himself, not believing he was better than warranted, and his final verdict rested entirely on God’s mercy. Only with God’s forgiveness could he hope to stand before Him and to serve others in His name. Rather than trying to justify himself, he saw matters for what they were.
What is your assessment of yourself today? Are you aware of your failures? Are you trying to put a brave face on your weaknesses? There’s good news in today’s scripture: a reminder that you only stand before God because of His mercy. Mercy isn’t just an exception for the weak. It’s the primary way that God interacts with people. If you’re seeking God, then you need forgiveness.
While the Lord is seeking people who obey His commands, He is also well aware of the particular weaknesses you face. Mercy and obedience go together. You will always need God’s support and kindness to overcome the temptations of life, but as you rely on Him, you will need to grow in your commitment to obedience. If you should fail, the God’s forgiveness can lift you up again as you resolve to return to Him.
Prayer: Lord, help me to approach You in humility and reverence, knowing that I can only serve You because of Your power at work in me.
