To the Chief Musician. Set to "Do Not Destroy." A Michtam of David when Saul sent men, and they watched the house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; Defend me from those who rise up against me. Psalm 59:1 NKJV

A man’s home may be his castle, but isn’t much of a fortress against men intent on violence. Psalm 59 is David’s prayer for protection, inspired by events that occurred while King Saul still held Israel’s throne.

The scene may be familiar if you’ve ever seen a comedy about a kid avoiding school. First Samuel 19:14-14 says, “Saul sent men to David’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, ‘If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.’ So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped. Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head. When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said, ‘He is ill.’”

By the time the men searched the home and found the decoy, David was praying and writing psalms in the next county over.

While Saul lived, David knew his life was in danger, but instead of eliminating the threat, David prayed for deliverance. He did what he could by listening to the life-saving advice of others, but he knew God was his fortress above all else.

When you need deliverance, use common sense and trust God—like David did.

Prayer: God, You are my fortress.
