Give You My Keys?
I want to give you the keys to my new BMW. Or perhaps you'd like the keys to my vacation home in Hawaii? Better yet, as the mayor of New York, I'll give you the keys to the city, and anything you want is yours... "Just a dream," you say. Well, maybe not. Did not the King of the Universe give the Keys of His Kingdom to His Son, Jesus Christ? In the book of Revelation, Jesus claims to have the 'Key of David' which gives him the authority to open doors that no man can shut. He also claims to have the 'Keys of hell and death'. One of the last statements He made to his disciples begins with, "All authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to me."
In other words, Jesus is now the Power Broker of the universe. All power and authority are His. Now guess what. There is an offer in Matthew 16, which is then repeated in chapter 18, that staggers the imagination. Jesus Christ says, "And I will give the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to you. And whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven. If two of you shall agree on earth as regarding anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them by my Father in Heaven."
Now put that in your theological pipe and smoke it! Actually, it seems like some theologians have tried just that. They hem and haw and argue and twist to try and make this offer fit into their ideas of God. But it just doesn't fit! Jesus is trying to blow our minds here. 'Keys to the Kingdom', 'Binding and Loosing', 'Ask and it shall be Done'. Sounds like an offer of some serious power. Reminds me of the time when Jesus breathed on His disciples and told them to receive the power of the Holy Spirit. Or at the upper room when the Spirit came as a rushing wind and fire. You see, the Keys to His Kingdom, or the Authority of His Name, have all become ours, "Not my might, nor by power, but by my Spirit," says the Lord. God be with you all...
