Hello, I was wondering what some of you do to get more out of reading your Bibles? When I just go through and read at a regular I pace I feel I'm missing some things and not getting everything out of it I can. I feel there is so much more that I can benefit from reading the Bible but I don't know the best way to go about it. Do any of you have any tricks, or methods you use? Maybe writing some of it down or praying about certian parts, ect. I need a good solid method so I can get every bit of goodness out of the Bible I can handle!

I personally doubt the value of trying to follow a formula. "A chapter a day keeps the devil away" may have value for some people, but I find that reading at a comfortable pace, using a good study Bible, and reading the study notes as I go along allows God to sometimes speak a prophecy into my heart and always helps me to understand what I'm reading. And finally,I do it every day!

best times for reading is to wake up earlier than usual and read or before going to sleep in the evening.
fasting helps of course... but those two times are usually good for me.
Pro 20:13 KJVA Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
the fasting daniel did is also good for reading.
Dan 10:3 KJVA I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.
so those are what works for me

I also like to start my day in the Word!
The Father sits on heavens throne.
Jesus sits at His right hand making constsnt intercession for the saints.
The Holy Spirit is our paraclete (the One who walks with us). He is our Teacher given by the Father at Jesus request.
Ask Him to "show you what this Word means and how it applies to your life". He will give you revelation into the scriptures that will blow you away. As He breathes on that Word it becomes alive and meets your every need. The same Word will take on new meaning at different times as the Living Word under the anointing of the Holy Spirit meets you were you are and brings life to every situation.
For those who enjoy a good study tool I recommend E-Sword. It is a freeware bible study program and I currently have around 30 bible translations I can cross compare with a click of the mouse. I also have 17 sets of commentairies, 15 sets of dictionairies and a gang of Christian books, maps, devotionals, graphics, etc, all downloaded as freeware. There are of course other modules you can buy.

For serious systematic study of the Bible I have found the study guide "Search the Scriptures" very helpful. It's a three year scheme that helps you to study the whole Bible.
Most study guides I have used are based on a commentary model - the expert helps to explain the passage. Sometimes I find this distracting because I end up weighing up the commentators' wisdom rather than the Bible.
This scheme sets out two or three questions to consider for each passage, which means I spend more time considering God's word.

Pray. Read the passage once. Read it again and write notes. Then read your notes. Pray asking God to show you what you need out of the passage.
I journal my prayers and anything else I get out of the passage.

Thank you all. I will have to definatly try some of these things such as the E - sword program. I have tried just reading the Bible everyday and while that does help I often find myself just going through the motions. I need something to force me to engage the material rather than just reading through it. Thanks!
