Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other's faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. You’ve probably heard that “clothing makes the man.” It is an old phrase. In fact, Shakespeare used a variant of it in Hamlet, when Polonius tells his son Laertes that “apparel oft proclaims the man.”
While people do tend to make snap judgments about others based on the clothes they wear, the truth is especially poignant when considering our spiritual clothing. When people look at your life, do they see someone dressed in mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience? Or do they see selfishness, immorality, anger, slander, and obscene talk?
It’s time to take off the old clothes the world gave you and put on Christ’s love for others. Get dressed so that people know that you are God’s because they see you wearing His clothes.
Prayer: Lord, dress me in Your clothes today. Stop me from putting back on the worldly clothes I used to wear.
