"But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. "Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. "Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. "Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. Luke 6:24-26 ESV
The American dream is sometimes described as an American’s inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s found in the Declaration of Independence and has pervaded the American ethos since this country was founded.
Life and liberty are easy enough to understand, but the pursuit of happiness can mean just about anything. Many Americans think money will make them happy, so they see America as a place to get rich. Some Americans see food as the answer to happiness, which might be why the US is among the most obese countries in the world. Some seek happiness by pushing bad feelings away through entertainment. Some think happiness is having the most “likes” on social media.
If riches, food, laughter, and popularity are the things you pursue to be happy, Jesus says, “Woe to you.”
America is a great place, but it is not a believer’s final destination. This existence is not the reward. It is the battleground. If you are satisfied with the American dream, you’re settling for less than God’s best.
Prayer: Lord, please reorder my priorities.
