When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. "Come on," they said, "make us some gods who can lead us. We don't know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt." Exodus 32:1 NLT

How long does it take to forget about God?

For the Israelites who left Egypt, it took almost no time at all. After Moses climbed up Mount Sinai to received God’s laws, the people got tired of waiting. Instead of recognizing that it was God who had led them out of Egypt, they blamed Moses for being slow. Even while they heard the rumblings on the mountain overhead, they called on Aaron, Moses’ brother, to make new gods who better fit their idea of how deities were supposed to work.

When God doesn’t act like we expect Him to, or when things take longer than we think they should, we too may be tempted to forget about God. We may not make golden calves to worship, but the idea of taking things into our own hands can seem appealing.

No, forgetting about God isn’t a good option. When we grow tired of waiting on Him, we need a heart change, not new gods. The answer is to increase our faith in His timing, not to pretend we’re in charge.

Prayer: God, when Your timing doesn’t fit my plans, keep me from forgetting about You.
